David Harold Gaskins, 58, fondly known as Capt. Fireball Gaskins, passed away on January 27, 2023. A lifelong resident of Hampton he was a volunteer with the Buckroe Volunteer Fire Department and EMTs and was currently enjoying his career as a Service Center Manager at Applied Industrial Technologies. He was a graduate of Phoebus High School and attended Thomas Nelson Community College. His most recent involvement with the Loyal Order of the Moose in Hampton #1514, was his latest volunteer work, he served on the Board Officers and then as was Legion Chairman. He was active with many fund-raising events including the Oakland Cemetery Clean Up project with the Airforce Sergeants Association and was instrumental in the organization and engineering of the last “Blast From the Past” at Ft. Monroe. As a child and teenager, David played football, loved fishing on Buckroe Fishing Pier, hanging out on the strip and playing on the beach. Some of his fondest memories were when he worked at Buckroe Beach Amusement Park and when he was with his Dad selling his works of art and treasures.
David was preceded in death by his father, “Capt” Harold Gaskins and sister, Bonnie S. Childress. He is survived by his adoring wife and her family, Kimberly O’Donoghue Gaskins; beautiful children and spouses, Kimberly A. McNeely and Robert, Danielle N Falvo and Chris, and Joshua S. Gaskins and Brittany; devoted mother, Phyllis O. Gaskins; loving brother, Dennis W. Gaskins; seven amazing grandchildren, Madison, Katy, Evan, Zander, Brady, Paisley and Rylan; caring nieces, Kristy Vaughan and Ashley Walter; and his aunts and many cousins.
Services for David will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Peninsula Baptist Church, 2605 Cunningham Dr. in Hampton. The family encourages everyone to wear their favorite Tie Dye in honor of David. The family will have a Celebration of Life for David following the service, where we all can enjoy listening to some of his favorite music by the Grateful Dead and other of his feel-good songs, tell stories of the good old times and share smiles, as David always did when he saw most of you. The family would love to hear your stories during this time to help try and heal from this sudden loss of this one-of-a-kind person. David was an amazing human being, and he will be tremendously missed.
The family wishes in lieu of any flowers, contributions be made to Loyal Order of the Moose, Mooseheart and Moosehaven, which can be made online or at the Celebration of Life. To watch live click here.
