David Gorra Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2022.
David Joseph Gorra, husband to Jayne Gorra, father to Ellen and Charles Gorra, father-in-law to Laetitia Gorra and John Loof, doting grandfather to Colette and Lavinia Gorra and Felix and Bianca Loof, and brother to Margaret Porter and John Gorra, passed away on August 6, 2022.

Over his 75 years, David led a full life. He was born in New London, Connecticut and raised by his Lebanese-American parents, Evelyn and Joseph, who instilled his sense of hard work. David matriculated at Assumption College, where he was a star tennis player. Though his tennis career might have ended in Worcester, MA, his education continued – earning two advanced degrees - an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters degree in International Relations from the College d'Europe in Belgium.

Through his lengthy career in multinational healthcare, David became a citizen of the world - a gift that he also shared with his family. The Gorras were blessed to call some of the most marvelous cities in the world home, including New York City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Philadelphia, Paris, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Quito and Panama City. New York City was the setting for his meet cute with Jayne, Singapore is where David became a father for the first time, and all of these cities developed David into a true gourmand with dim sum at the top of his list.

To know David is to know a fearless straight-talker with a quick wit and dry sense of humor. He was happiest driving around Syracuse, smoking a cigar, listening to classic rock or embroiled in a conversation about current affairs with someone he found to be his intellectual equal. David suffered no fools and minced no words.

The Gorra family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Doctors Without Borders. It would give the family great comfort to immerse themselves in any memories you have of David or messages for the family.

I am very sorry to learn of David's passing. I remember him from the days when we would visit my grandparents on Dart Street. David was already a star in tennis and in academia, and the sky was the limit for him. May his memory live on in your hearts.

Jayne, so sorry for the loss of your husband, and to Ellen and Charles, though I do not believe we have ever met, my sincere condolences for the loss of your loving father. From your Legacy, David sounds like such a loving father and grandfather. Who could ask for more?

I'll share a few memories I have of your father, who worked in the produce business along with your uncle John, for my dad during their high school and college summers. I can still remember him, at my dad's request, patiently giving my brother and I, when we were about 11 and 9, a couple of tennis lessons at Mitchel College in New London. We were utterly hopeless on the court, but David never let onto us that we were hopeless.

Years later, David would often stop by our produce wholesale to visit and say hello. Your grandfather Joe worked there along side my dad for many years. One visit he took everyone's shoe size, and when he returned from his next trip to South Korea we were all gifted $8.00 Adidas sneakers.

I last saw David about 11 years ago in Syracuse. I had flown in for a 30th college reunion about an hour away, and I met him at his office and we went out for lunch. It was wonderful to talk with him, and to hear about all of you including your Pet Food company Jayne. But what struck me was here was this man who had run companies and travelled all over the world, and he still had some misgivings about not buying the family produce business when we sold it in the late 80's. When I suggested that the produce business is a great business to be from, but not one to stay in, he expressed a lot of confidence that he would have made a very good go of it. And I'm sure he would have. My how that loading dock of our youth, somehow kept a small hold on all of us these many years later, your dad included. Limited Dim Sum options in New London however, so he made the right choice. Jayne, it would be wonderful to see you again, and Charles and Ellen, well it would be great to meet my young cousins should the opportunity ever present itself. I will always have such fond memories of your dad. Peace to you all, and again my heartfelt sympathies. John

Ellen, Charles, Jayne and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of spending time at the Gorra house with David cracking dry jokes and us talking about Lebanese food. I will be forever grateful for the wonderful daughter he raised. He will be missed by many.

I loved him so very much. We worked together at NYHC for many years. He was a strong leader, did not mince words but he took care of us all when we needed something. We ended up having a great report and appreciation of each other that I cherished. Even after our time working together we kept in touch and he was always supportive of me in my job explorations. May he Rest In Peace and know that he made an impact and will never be forgotten.

I learned of Dave's passing from Dr Beshara yesterday. I didn't know him real well but he was a fun person and had a great personality. He was always very kind to me when I stopped in to to see him at the NYHC. I have always thought of him as a friend. God bless!

I worked in the practice with David. I will always remember his "booming " voice heard in every corner of the building! He was always kind to me and had my back in many situations. Condolences to his family.

I can see Joe in his face, and that brings back so many memories. My much-admired older cousin when I was a boy, and I have a vivid image of his and Jayne's wedding. I last saw David in 2011, in Paris--he picked me up in his rental car, and said that he liked driving in the city; also that he wanted a particular kind of sausage for dinner. So we drove to a place I knew and squeezed the car into a spot and had a wonderful meal. So sorry, Jayne and Ellen and Charles, for your loss.

Mrs. Gorra, Charles and Ellen: we are truly sorry for your loss. Mr. Gorra was a remarkable man... I admired his intellectuality so much! We will always remember how welcoming and loving he was to us right from the start. I´d love our rides in his Volvo while smoking his cigar listening to NPR which I´m hooked on because of him. He surely will live on through all of you and in all of our hearts.

Jayne, Elle, Charles and families, so sorry for your loss. David certainly suffered no fools, he didn't raise any either... His quick wit lives on in your family and I hope you remember him every time you smell a cigar, eat a good meal or make a sharp comment worth his laughter. I know I certainly will. I am extremely grateful for the way he raised and shaped the life of one of the most important people to me. Thanks for everything you were to us David.
Love,
Claire

Our sincere condolences to the Gorra family, RIP Uncle David. One of my fondest memories of David is spending family time at the Gorra house near Philadelphia when I brought a few cigars for my grandfather, Dr. George Sullivan, and Uncle David said "You want cigars?", we went to the basement and he had about a 4 foot humidor and he said, "take all you want, my customers give them to me all the time." Thanks to my Uncle David, I now enjoy my Honduran cigars and moving forward will always think of him when doing so.

Sending all our love to you, Jayne, Ellen, Charles, and family. David will be missed. Some of my favorite memories are of the amazing dinner parties hosted by David and Jayne over the years with wonderful cuisine from around the world and incredible stories from all of their travels. David always welcomed us warmly with a cigar in one hand and a dog in the other, making your home feel like my home away from home. May he be enjoying that cigar somewhere comfortable from now on.

Our sincere condolences,
Erin and family
