David James Hanel 31 December 1948 24 September 2010 David Hanel, age 61, of Calgary, AB, formerly of Saskatoon died accidentally at his home September 24, 2010. David (Dave) was born in Saskatoon. He attended Albert School and graduated from Nutana Collegiate in 1967. During high-school years he was a member of 2nd North Saskatchewan Regiment and trained at the local Hugh Cairns Armoury and Camp Dundurn. He spent many years in the telephone industry, at which he excelled. David was married to Cathy in 1976 and they divorced a few years later. He became very close to Cheryl with whom he partnered for 20 years. Later he owned a Work World Clothing store in Calgary until his retirement. After he retired he spent his days with his loyal, beloved dog, Tony. His passion was fishing with his buddy, Greg East. David was a great reader of serious material, he gardened a little, golfed a little, took fishing jaunts with his camper, and later on made several memorable trips as a companion for his mother, Elsie, the most memorable of trips being the one to Churchill, MB. David visited Saskatoon often to attend Patemanfamily gatherings and reunions that were very important to him. David is predeceased by his father, Joseph J. Hanel (1980); his younger brother, Leonard J. Hanel (1972); grandparents, Jack and Minnie Pateman; grandmother, Petrunella Hanel; Elsie's second husband, Newton Jones; and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his mother, Elsie Hanel-Jones (Saskatoon); younger brother, Tim Hanel (June) of Edmonton; Aunts Ivy Whyte and Irene McConnell, Rosetown; Uncle Clifford Pateman (Jean), Saskatoon; many cousins scattered across Canada; and his devoted dog, Tony (Calgary). David was dearly loved by his family and will be sadly missed. May he rest in the arms of Our Lord and may his soul have peace and joy forever. In lieu of flowers, his family request donations for the care of his beloved dog, Tony to Calgary Humane Society ( www.calgaryhumanesociety.ca ) 4455 110 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 2T7, telephone 1-403-205-4455, (Credit Cards accepted) or to the SPCA Saskatoon ( www.saskatoonspca.com ) 5028 Clarence Avenue South, Grasswood, SK, S7T 1A7, telephone 306-374-7387 (Credit Cards accepted). I only knew Dave socially but did enjoy his company. He was a good guy and I wish I had been given the time to know him better. My condolences to family and friends.
