David Harper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 29 to Jul. 31, 2020.
David W. Harper
Oct. 11, 1925 - June 3, 2020
Farewell to David W. Harper who passed away of natural causes June 3, 2020.
A practicing attorney in Portland for over 50 years, he was the last of the 'old guard'. Born in the Detroit area he, his sister and mom went to live with his grandmother at a grocery, hotel and restaurant.
He was a member of the Black Panther division of the army during WWII, worked for State Farm in Eastern Oregon and graduated from University of Oregon Law School. He joined Vergeer and Samuels and met his future wife Shirlee, then off to downtown Portland with Keene, Hessler, Pearlman and Harper. He continued his relationship with farmers and ranchers with frequent trips to the county courthouses.
A particular case he had involved a child burned while wearing flammable sleepware, his trial lead to renovating fire retardant pajamas. He was always an advocate and truly cared about his clients. He was a great man, husband and dad and he made a difference and will be greatly missed.
Surviving relatives include daughters, Claudia Harper-Taylor, Alyson and Sue Harper; and grandsons, Justin Taylor and Harper Taylor.

He was one of a kind! My mom was his legal secretary for many years, and I also worked for him as a receptionist. He will be remembered for his feisty attitude and his bellowing out my mom's name when he needed something. I could hear him yelling at her from the reception area, ha! They always had a mutual respect for each other. Good bye Mr. Harper.
