David Hayden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 25, 2022.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 6, 2022, from 10 am to Noon at the Vermilionville performance center for David Clark Hayden who died peacefully at home on July 19, 2022, at the age of 69. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, to please consider donating to Friends of the Lafayette Animal Shelter (FLASh) at www.flashlafayette.org.

David was born on April 27, 1953, in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the youngest to two older sisters and never missed an opportunity to be the quintessential annoying baby brother. This led to a lifetime of practical jokes and shenanigans that are now the stuff of legend at family gatherings. When he wasn't up to no good, David's parents helped him foster an interest in aviation and space. After high school, he attended A & P school in Somerset, Kentucky, where he graduated as a helicopter mechanic. With his newly acquired skills, he soon realized there were very few helicopters in Kentucky and decided to head toward the Gulf of Mexico. He built a home in Abbeville, LA where he resided for more than forty years. His tinkering was not limited to helicopters. He also held a lifelong interest in British cars. As a longtime member of the New Orleans British Motoring Club, he often traveled to various car shows and rallies frequently bringing home multiple awards. He even went so far as to hold a funkana of his own for several years. The highlight was the seesaw. Cars rolled up one side and tried to perfectly balance to win points. Almost no one succeeded which pleased him to no end.

He was rarely fulfilled unless he had a project going. After a day at work, he would come home to a car restoration or a construction build. Never one to let go of something once acquired, he found himself in constant need of more space. After outgrowing a shop with a two-car garage, he built an aircraft hangar. After outgrowing the hangar, he built a ten-car garage. At the height of his collection, he owned ten British sports cars, two tractors, a forklift, a trailer, a beat-up Suburban, and a Mazda Miata. His children were both thankful he always had a spare car to borrow, and terrified of all the things they would have to get rid of when he passed away.

When he finally settled in for the evening after his time in the shop, he was most happy with a dog in his lap. Having grown up as a staunch cat person, his love of dogs came on swiftly and abruptly. He loved time with his "snacking partner" and had a hard time sleeping without a set of paws in his back. Never one to tolerate disobedience in his children, he inexplicably adored an incessant barker who never heard a command she obeyed and thoroughly lived up to her name, Ms. Bee Havin. He was also the dogfather of Addy Belle, who asked us to note that she is nothing like her sister, and will deeply miss the shared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every morning.

While an avid collector of car parts, aircraft parts, and various types of machinery, one of his most vast collections was that of Dad jokes. He loved a good Dad joke. He loved a bad Dad joke. He opened most conversations with the latter much to the chagrin of his wife and children. But they groaned their way through each and every one with love. He was always up for a laugh or a good time. Never one to simply hand out a Christmas gift, he often spent weeks planning elaborate scavenger hunts only to have them end in an even more elaborate wrapping job. He once wrapped his children's presents in hundreds of layers of industrial shrink wrap and gave them each a pair of round-tip kindergarten scissors to aid in opening the gift. That was a long Christmas. His children tried to retaliate and failed miserably as he was the self-proclaimed "Smartest Man in the Whole Wide World" and thwarted their attempts to trip him up at every turn. He was a man of eclectic musical taste, incredible intelligence, a work ethic that would topple most men half his age, a constant support, a father figure to his own and many others, and a sheer force of nature. He would not look kindly on all this nonsense and fluff and would definitely say "Just tell them I died and be done with it!" To that end we conclude with:

He is survived by his wife, Menda Ballard Hayden, his daughter Cara Hayden Bacque (Stew), his daughter Rachel Patton Hayden (Brit), and his son Ian Lucus Ballard. He is also survived by his sisters JoEllen Hayden (George) and Catherine Bishop (Charles), two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Shaun Grimes Hayden, and his parents Joseph and Eleanor Hayden.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 6th from 10 am to Noon at the performance center at Vermilionville at 300 Fisher Road in Lafayette, LA 70508. Guests are free to share their favorite Dad joke, memory, story, or reading.

My condolence to David's family (I just learned of his passing from a friend). I enjoyed reading his obit; his humor lives on. I went to school with David in Lexington, KY staring with elementary, and lived in the neighborhood. My family knew his family, and I got to know his mother and sister better thru Girl Scouts. David was always nice to me and he would give little things (I was a somewhat sickly child, and thus a bit shy). He was always gentle with animals, and he definitely had a different outlook with a sense of humor. I'm happy to know he was happy, and a friend to many. He will be missed!

I was saddened to learn of his passing. I'm glad I got to know Dave a bit through the Saturday car drives. I'm not an honest car enthusiast, but I was always impressed at his vast knowledge of the automobile (mechanics and history). It was so obviously a love of his. His sense of humor was always on point and just a fun guy to hang out with. Godspeed, Dave. Much love to Menda and the family -

I had the great pleasure, some years back, to meet Menda, and to see my old friend and conspirator in crime, Dave. It was at a 4th of July party in Lexington. It was a memory I´ve run in my mind quite a bit, lately. It was so good to see Dave, and pleasure to meet Menda. Memories of Dave and my youth have comforted me in some of life´s rougher spots. I´m a retired teacher, having mentioned many times Dave´s legendary "TR-3" to many classes. Dave will always live large in my memories and you, Menda, in my prayers.

Menda, I had the great pleasure of meeting you in Lexington, at a 4th of July party, and the pleasure of seeing my long time friend Dave. It was truly a memory I played often lately. It was one of the high points of my visit to Lexington. I was one of Dave´s high school friends. Dave was part of my most memorable fun times of those years, I have often visited those memories, along life´s way. It has comforted me in life´s toughest spots. I hope my words about Dave can provide you with some modicum of comfort as well. He had a core of friends from Lexington, that his memory will always provide comfort... and Love, too. He will always live large in my heart.

I had the good fortune to be Dave's friend for over 50 years.
From our early years together in school in Lexington, KY to our time together in airframe & powerplant school in Somerset, KY to our time working in Gulf coast helicopter operations I cherished it all.
We spent many hours working on Dave's first Triumph TR-3, taking two junk cars and combining them into one driveable car. It wasn't much to look at but it was road worthy and dependable, at least as dependable as any car with Lucas electrics can be! Thus began Dave's lifelong love of British motor cars.
Menda, Cara, and Rachel, I know the grief must be crushing but please hold your heads up high, we will see Dave again.
David, I love you brother. Your departure has left a hole in my heart no one can fill. Rest easy my friend.

David and I got acquainted while working at Air Logistics. Years later, after Dave left Air Log and I was getting close to retiring , I met Dave by chance while we were gassing up at a station on highway 90 we talked work . Dave mentioned I might enjoy working at Arrow Aviation after I retired. I remembered that talk and two years later I was officially asked to join the Arrow team. Over the next eleven plus years I enjoyed working with Dave . He was knowledgeable ,to no end ,about so many subjects and a super voice with little volume control.
Dave was great Pearson and friend . I will not for get the nickname he gave me ... Dandy Don ... so nice to have known you Dave.....

David, I´m so happy we spoke before your passing, we spent so much time together at work and building your log cabin. I never drove nails that long in my life! We shared many good times and laughs. I recall working for hours building your roof one weekend and we joked about us getting sunburned and who would burn quicker. David, never saw people by color or race, he saw good or bad. I´m grateful he saw the good in me which allowed us to form a friendship and share many influenceable times together. We shared many good times, some we won´t discuss but always lead to a good laugh.

When you´re friends with David, you have a friend for life!

David, I love you brother, you will be missed but never forgotten, until we meet again in heaven wear your safety glasses and keep those helicopters flying.

I'll never forget when we came down there to visit Dave and Menda and Dave took my son out to the hanger and showed him all the cars. To this day Christopher still remembers that. And the ride in the car with Menda.

I´ll always remember the car races in the front yard, the firework displays for the holidays and vast array of animals that greeted you upon your arrival. Mr. Dave was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. Thank you for being a great neighbor and friend to our family.
