David Wayne Hughes was born on June 16, 1961, to Daniel and Dorothy (Long) Hughes in Fargo, ND. He grew up in Moorhead, MN where he attended school.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dave, a figure who touched the lives of many in Moorhead and the Dent areas. Dave was not only known for his skills as a manager and cook at the VFW in Moorhead and as a cook at the American Legion in Moorhead, but also for his vibrant spirit and entrepreneurial ventures. Throughout his life, he embraced various endeavors, including running a food truck named "That’s a Wrap," operating a karaoke business called "Raise the Roof," and establishing the DWH Cleaning and Flooring Companies. Most recently, Dave brought his vision to life with his life partner, Jenny, as they owned and operated the Mysteries Café in Dent, MN.
For 23 wonderful years, Dave shared his life with Jenny Tollefson. He wore his pride for his son Mason as a badge of honor and dedicated himself to his family's happiness. Together, they cherished countless moments on Little McDonald Lake, where Dave created a home filled with love and laughter.
Dave was known for his adventurous spirit; he often would embark on spontaneous journeys, driven by instinct and curiosity. Those who knew him would remember him as an opinionated soul, sometimes with a stubborn streak, but always with a heart full of passion. Whether hosting spirited gatherings where no guest left hungry or enjoying the thrill of hunting and fishing, he ensured that those around him felt joy and warmth.
An avid gardener, Dave took delight in nurturing seeds each winter, envisioning the vibrant vegetables and flowers that would bloom in his garden. His enthusiasm for hunting, fishing, and golf filled his leisure time with happiness.
Though Dave may have been rough around the edges, his unwavering spirit, generosity, and zest for life will forever be cherished in the memories of those who had the privilege to know him. As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with adventure, laughter, and love. Dave will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
He is survived by his life partner Jennifer Tollefson, one son Mason Hughes of Wahpeton, ND, three siblings: Dorothy Ann Thiessen of Fargo, Kathie (Dale) Jenson of Moorhead, Jim (Marcy Thompson) Hughes of Glyndon, MN, sister-in-law: Becky Hughes of Woodstock, GA, mother in law: Jodi Tollefson of Rochester, MN, and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Grace United Methodist Church in Moorhead, MN with Rev. Taylor Johnson officiating. The visitation will start at 10 AM on Wednesday. Per Dave’s wishes, he would want you to dress casual and wear a baseball hat with sunglasses on the top to celebrate his life.
