Dearest David, I've had dreams of you for the past two nights. You and I went head to head our Freshman year for the same position, Center, on the Southwest Football team! You always inspired me to be better than I was, as a player, and even more as a person. My dreams included freshman football, junior year football in the training room laughing our tails off with Yates and Naler. The other dream was laughing so hard at lunch with you and Andy Karsner. I was devastated back when I heard the tragic news. And honestly I have felt a hole ever since. I've thought of you often! I'm a father now of a fantastic, wonderful 10 year old boy Kia, and in my last dream, you doted on Kia just as present and as thoughtfully as you always did as our Captain and as my friend. You always made time for us, every one of us. David, you made us all so proud of you and we are still to this day, filled with so many fond memories. I am honored to have been blessed by your friendship and leadership through all our years at Southwest. Zach, your father was and is an incredible man. I smile imagining the many ways you may be like your father. Take care of sweet Jordan and Amy! Your father is with you always. Much love and honor to you all.
David, I hope you and Jimmy Thomas are both laughing right now--I can hear you both saying as you look at each other, "Rowell wrote that?" We miss you David yet your spirit lives! God bless!

Music, when soft voices die
Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.
Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I don't know if you remember me but David was my first boyfriend in 7th grade. You used to take me to his games in whatever sport he was playing at the moment. I moved from Fort Worth to CT in 8th Grade. I recently joined Facebook and looked up some names and found the posting from Princeton that he had passed away. I just wanted to give you my deepest sympathy. The words that were said about him seemed to describe him perfectly even back then.

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day. Thank you God for letting me be David's Mother. Instead of David giving me slobbery kisses, I have to settle for those of Pudge, the puppy you gave me 11 years ago. To be a dog, he's so much like you, in that he has such a sweet and loving spirit and loves to play ball as you did. Dad and I don't know what we'd do without him. Please God, give my Davy a big hug and a kiss! All our love, Mom and Dad

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Your Easter Sunday entry seemed to have gotten lost, but basically your father and I were having sweet memories of how much you loved hunting Easter eggs. I would hide them dozens and dozens of times each year, inside or outside, it didn't matter. Your dad says he wishes you were here so we could go Easter-egg hunting. Thank you God for sending your Son so that mine might live. We love you, Mom and Dad.

It saddens me to hear of David's passing. David and I lived on the same street in Ft. Worth growing up. We played baseball together in high school. I have always been proud of David (a fellow Southwest High boy) for graduating from Princeton.
