David Irving Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 14 to Mar. 20, 2023.
DAVID MURRAY IRVING Junior was born in Alameda, California to Minda Everetta Gillespie and David Murray Irving. When his father went overseas with the U.S. Navy, he and his mother moved toOregon to live with her parents, Iowa and Everett Gillespie. He quickly became his grandfather's "little pal." Growing up in Medford, David played on school basketball, football and baseball teams starting in junior high. His many music talents first surfaced with piano and trumpet in grade school. Gifted with a bass voice, he sang in choirs and community musicals throughout his life. He was active in Medford's First Presbyterian Church choir and youth group. From a young age, David loved organizing group adventures from waterskiing parties at Emigrant Lake to putting together a winning dominos team for the San Francisco Banker's Club Annual Tournament. He was an avid golfer and fisherman with related stories to share.

David graduated from Southern Oregon University in 1966 and then joined Aetna Insurance's corporate sales team. He lived in Phoenix and Los Angeles before settling in the Bay Area where he focused on executive compensation. He and wife Maria Martins met in 1985 while working at Alexander and Alexander Insurance Brokers in San Francisco. In 1987, they moved to Trail along the Upper Rogue, an area David had first visited at age 6 with his grandfather on MEDCO's lumber train. David and Maria exchanged wedding vows on at their riverfront home called the Osprey House. In 2000, they ventured south to Ajijic near Guadalajara. David opened a real estate practice. They retired to Southern Oregon in 2007 living first in Cave Junction and later moving to Horizon Village in Grants Pass.

David is survived by his wife Maria, children Jocelyn Parker and Blake Irving, grandsons Max and Mason Parker, sister Sandra and husband Stephen Mueller and their children, Justin and and Kristin Mueller. They and his many friends near and far will treasure his keen mind, knowledge of history, his love of Oregon and that special twinkle in his eyes for all who knew him.
