David Jordan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2025.

David Howard Jordan, 87, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away unexpectedly on March 21, 2025. Born on June 12, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Howard and Irene Jordan, who predeceased him.

David married the love of his life, Mary Tomkins, on May 18, 1967. They shared a beautiful life together until her passing. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who took great pride in his family.

A mechanical and hydraulic engineer specializing in crane design, David spent most of his career with Harnischfeger Corporation. In 1989, when Harnischfeger's crane division was spun off as Century II, he moved with his family to Myrtle Beach, where the company relocated to Conway, SC. David's expertise and dedication were highly respected in his field.

David was also a proud veteran, serving in the Naval Reserves and patrolling the Caribbean during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His service reflected his strong sense of duty and commitment.

His faith was the cornerstone of his life. David and Mary were founding members of the River of Life Church of God, where he was an active and dedicated member. His kindness, wisdom, and spirit of service touched many within his church community.

David's passions included reading, following NASCAR, and working on projects around his home. He was a constant source of encouragement and inspiration to those around him, always eager to share a story or lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his children, Mark (Debbie) Jordan of Myrtle Beach, SC; William (Kim) Jordan of Wilmington, NC; and Chrystal Spivey of Conway, SC. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Christopher Spivey of Conway, Joshua Jordan of Conway, Cayley Spivey of Los Angeles, CA, Sarah Jordan of Nashville, TN, his namesake, David Jordan of Wilmington, NC, Leslie (Bryan) Jordan of Conway, and Lyndsey (Jeremy) Hood of Conway.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, David was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret (Peggy) Havlicek of Cedar Rapids, IA.

David was a wonderful man who fulfilled his responsibilities with dedication and grace. His presence brought joy to all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire those he loved. He will be deeply missed.

A celebration of David's life will be held at River of Life Church of God on Saturday, April 12 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice.

Dave was my neighbor on G Avenue NW in Cedar Rapids, IA. I am 11 years younger and always looked up to him as one of the really nice people on our street. There were times in my grade school years that he entrusted me to do a simple task: bring in his mail when he had to travel. He and Mary and the kids are well remembered and appreciated. My heartfelt condolences to all Dave's surviving family. Bob Campagna

He was the best man. I´m proud that he was my grandpa. I´ll cherish his stories, jokes/laugh, kindness, our library trips and his example every day. He cared for grandma so well, and now they can be together again. I love them both. Love you papa.
