David KAPLAN Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Apr. 8, 2015.

DAVID LEON KAPLAN
1923 - 2015
With great sadness the family announces the death of David Kaplan, which occurred at his residence in Saskatoon on Monday, April 6, 2015 at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his wife Susanne Micheaux Kaplan, son Jonathan Kaplan of Jerusalem, Israel, son Edward Kaplan of Hamden, CT and daughter Sarah Kaplan of Cornwall, ON; grandchildren Naomi Kaplan Damary, Rachel Orpaz, Allison Kaplan, Serena Cortes- Kaplan and Hannah Cortes-Kaplan; great-granddaughter Michal Ruth Damary and step children Ivor MacKay and Elise Ginsburg. He was predeceased by his parents Joshua Samuel and Nettie Kaplan, brother Charles Kaplan and wife Harriett Elaine Kaplan. David was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 12, 1923. He served in the US Army from 1942 to 1946, and received his Bachelor's of Music at Roosevelt University (Chicago), Master's of Music at Oberlin College (Ohio) and PhD in Music at Indiana University. Teaching music took him to Chicago, rural Illinois, Texas and Saskatoon. His career path included teaching, conducting, composing, adjudicating and serving as a member of provincial and national music organizations. He was also a co-creator of Saskatoon's Festival of Faith. He researched and collected musical instruments from around the world which now make up the Kaplan Collection at the University of Saskatchewan. David was an active member of the Saskatoon Jewish Community, Nutana Rotary Club, Saskatchewan Music Educators Association, Saskatoon Multi- Faith, and Saskatoon Folk Fest. In recognition of his work, he received numerous awards, most notably the Order of Canada in 2002. Some of his favorite pastimes and hobbies included stamp collecting, travelling, reading, tennis, camping, raising Scottish terriers and drinking a good chocolate phosphate. David was known for his extreme sense of Chicago humour and comical facial expressions. His children fondly remember his original stories of Mr. Minisk, camping and his generosity. Music continued to be David's main passion and in his later years he founded the Saskatoon Klezmer Band for which he composed and arranged numerous pieces. Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Agudas Israel Synagogue (715 McKinnon Avenue) with interment to follow at the Agudas Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the United Way, the University of Saskatchewan Department of Music and Congregation Agudas Israel. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.

We moved from Saskatoon at the end of 1967, so he would have been friends with my parents (now both deceased). I remember being kindergarten and first grade friends with his daughter, Sarah. So sorry for your loss and for having fallen out of touch for so many decades.

We are so sorry for your loss. We have not been in touch for several years but have thought about David & Harriett often. My mom, Eleanor Gelman is still living and my sister, Kathy, and I still live in Indianapolis. (your Indianapolis cousins)

Thank you for supporting the Saskatoon Music Festival

My condolences to Dr Kaplan's family. This morning, I just found out our son was chosen to receive The Dr David Kaplan Elementary Violin Scholarship. I recall meeting him in the CD section of McNally Robinson several years ago and he kindly offered some suggestions. A generous soul who will be greatly missed. Thank you for inspiring so many young musicians and humanity in general.

So sorry for your loss. Your father did so much in and with his life. The best anyone can hope to give the world is children well-raised. You are his legacy and what a tribute you are to both your parents.

I am so very sorry to hear of the death of this wonderful man. I wish I could have been at his funeral. Dr. Kaplan was an enormous influence on me: he truly helped to shape my career as a musician and educator. He was always supportive, questioning, critical, helpful -- and ALWAYS funny. He would sing the classic Italian art song "Caro mio ben" whenever he saw me, just to tease a young voice major! I still think of him today when I hear that song.

This was a great man. His legacy lives on in the Saskatoon musical community, and in the many many lives he helped to shape. Mine is one of them. Blessings upon you, Dr. Kaplan.

Dr. Kaplan, thank you for believing in me, and giving me the tools to successfully carve out a career in music education. Forever, I will be indebted to your spirit of generosity, kindness, and humour, as well as to your very animated and understandable teaching style. It is with regret I did not know of your passing until today, April 9, as I have been out of the country and not in touch with Sakatoon news. I wish I could have been at the synagogue to share with former colleagues and friends the celebration of your life. Thank you for all you have done and have been, and may you be blessed abundantly in your new home. My condolences go out to your family for they have parted with a great man.

I met David through the Nutana Rotary club where he was long time member. I will always remember his rendition of Oh Canada played at an uptempo speed as he stated it is an anthem not a dirge!

He always had a sly comment for me and I delighted in retorting back whereupon we would both laugh. He was a gift who lit up a room and will be missed greatly.

It was an honor to know him.

I have so many fond memories of Dr. Kaplan. He was my professor, mentor, fellow Klezmer player, and spent time with me on the very last evening before I left Saskatoon to return to Ontario more than 25 years ago. There is no question that he had a profound influence on me, as he had on so many others. R.I.P Dr. K.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr.Kaplan when I worked at a grocery store he frequented. An incredibly genuine and personable man! I would make a point to go say hello when I saw him. His spirit was so infectious,it made a persons day to spend a few minutes with him. A huge loss for this community, irregardless of his prodigious musical talent!

I am sorry for your loss. I have many fond musical memories of David. These went from my younger days in Elementary school to my High School days.

All of those memories are still as if they just happened last year.

I have a tremendous respect for his tireless efforts and the passion that he had for music of very diverse genres.

My thoughts are with you all.

As a kid, I always knew where the fun was when my parents held a party in our home. It was anywhere within range of David's wonderful and infectious sense of humour. He was a great influence on me and a dear friend to my mother and father. He will be greatly missed but remembered always.

My deepest sympathies to the family and my friend Sarah.

Dear Susanne and family,

As you well know, your husband was a remarkable man. His vision, energy, wisdom, insight, and compassion left an indelible mark upon, and example for, all of us who were fortunate to be his students during a formative time of our lives. His profound influence guided my professional career and continues to the present day. As a former Department Head of Music having served five years, I can certainly attest to his remarkable diplomacy, insight, and resilience in having served sixteen! I, and my colleagues in the music community, will certainly miss him.

Please accept my condolences for your (and our) loss.
