I am former student who was in a class of his at Miami. I enjoyed his class very much, and he was a great teacher. I was a student of his in the late eighties. I lived in Lexington before moving back to Ohio. I had heard from a professor in the English department that Mr. Mann was living in Kentucky. I looked him up and spoke to him. We had a good little chat. I was sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great person.

I just happened on Dr. Mann's obituary in the most recent edition of the Miamian. My future wife (Marianna "Molly" Gabriel) and I were in his advanced freshman English class in 1973. It's possible that we actually met there, or perhaps it was at Wesley Foundation. I'm not sure, but Molly will set the record straight. It was not a large class and Dr. Mann was an engaging professor, the kind who motivates students intrinsically to do their best. Molly wrote a paper on some aspect of Sherlock Holmes literature, and Dr. Mann encouraged her to submit it for publication. She did and was delighted when it was accepted by a journal devoted to the famed sleuth. I recall a charming twinkle in Dr. Mann's eye as he guided us through some interesting discussions. I guess it was obvious that Molly and I were interested in each other, and perhaps he even divined that we would become one of those celebrated Miami Mergers. We got married in 1975 and are approaching our 43rd anniversary. Our time in Dr. Mann's class, his warmth, wit, and attention, are still cherished memories. In my estimation he was a first-class professor and human being. I am saddened by his passing, and I wish his family comfort and peace. AHA! Thomas Metcalf was in our class!

I took Prof. Manns course on William Butler Yeats during the 1973-74 academic year. He was a superb teacher - a great listener, a caring person, and someone who encouraged students to look deeply into great poetry and literature. My love of (and frequent returns to) many of Yeats poems, lasting 45 years, was Prof. Manns great gift to me, along with his being a great role model.

Sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Mann. Enjoyed my first class with him and registered for more thereafter. Always impressed and inspired by his knowledge and passion for his topics.
