David Mann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2017.
Mann, David Douglas,

Passed away on 24 December 2017 as gracefully as he lived after decades of being treated for t-cell lymphoma. He was born in Oklahoma City, the next to youngest of five children. His family encouraged a love of classical music, literature, and games, especially crossword puzzles. After serving in the Navy, he sold a Porsche in order to enroll in graduate school, eventually completing his Ph.D. in English from Indiana University. A specialist in 18th-century British drama, David taught at Wabash College briefly before spending thirty-two years in the English Department at Miami University (Ohio), where he published hundreds of articles and five books, principally on 18th-century drama and Robert Louis Stevenson. More important than his scholarship, though, was the joy he received teaching students on all levels, from first-year to doctoral candidates. After retiring from Miami in 2000, he devoted himself to travel, enjoying recent trips to Mexico, England, France, and Italy; to food and wine; to reading to his wife as she cooked; and to escaping medical woes by pleasurable time spent with family and friends, often in the garden. David was loved by many and will be remembered most of all for his gentleness, his concern for others, and his good spirits despite many years of medical difficulties.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Garland Mann; his sister, Dorothy Mann Cameron; his sisters-in-law, Martha G. Moesker and Hanna Mann; his brothers-in-law, Brian Stewart and Joseph Moesker; and many wonderful and amazing nieces and nephews and great- nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loftin and Jeannette, as well as his siblings Betty, Loftin, and Jeannette.

David and his wife wish to thank doctors and nurses who provided excellent care and longterm support, including especially Drs. Alexis Karageorge, Terrence Hadley, Stephen Raible, Brian Ganzel, Kristie Paris, Hal Corwin, Laura Klein, Cary Kirk, and Pierluigi Porcu, the last from the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA. The oncology nurses at Norton Cancer Institute-Audubon made an enormous difference in the quality of his care. For all of this help, we are deeply grateful.

David asked that there be no memorial, but friends and family will be asked to gather in the spring to toast him as the garden comes back to life.

I am former student who was in a class of his at Miami. I enjoyed his class very much, and he was a great teacher. I was a student of his in the late eighties. I lived in Lexington before moving back to Ohio. I had heard from a professor in the English department that Mr. Mann was living in Kentucky. I looked him up and spoke to him. We had a good little chat. I was sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great person.

I just happened on Dr. Mann's obituary in the most recent edition of the Miamian. My future wife (Marianna "Molly" Gabriel) and I were in his advanced freshman English class in 1973. It's possible that we actually met there, or perhaps it was at Wesley Foundation. I'm not sure, but Molly will set the record straight. It was not a large class and Dr. Mann was an engaging professor, the kind who motivates students intrinsically to do their best. Molly wrote a paper on some aspect of Sherlock Holmes literature, and Dr. Mann encouraged her to submit it for publication. She did and was delighted when it was accepted by a journal devoted to the famed sleuth. I recall a charming twinkle in Dr. Mann's eye as he guided us through some interesting discussions. I guess it was obvious that Molly and I were interested in each other, and perhaps he even divined that we would become one of those celebrated Miami Mergers. We got married in 1975 and are approaching our 43rd anniversary. Our time in Dr. Mann's class, his warmth, wit, and attention, are still cherished memories. In my estimation he was a first-class professor and human being. I am saddened by his passing, and I wish his family comfort and peace. AHA! Thomas Metcalf was in our class!

I took Prof. Manns course on William Butler Yeats during the 1973-74 academic year. He was a superb teacher - a great listener, a caring person, and someone who encouraged students to look deeply into great poetry and literature. My love of (and frequent returns to) many of Yeats poems, lasting 45 years, was Prof. Manns great gift to me, along with his being a great role model.

Sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Mann. Enjoyed my first class with him and registered for more thereafter. Always impressed and inspired by his knowledge and passion for his topics.
