David Mayers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2005.
MAYERS, David Charles - Passed away peacefully on March 12 in Burlingame at the age of 90. Beloved husband for 54 years to Erma "Pat" Mayers; loving father to John, Judy, Janet and Joyce; devoted grandfather to nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother to Marge Colvin; and lifelong friend to Carl Rothblum. A third-generation San Franciscan, David was a graduate of Lowell High School and UC Berkeley. After college he began his career as an insurance broker with the family firm of Hyam's & Mayers. He was a lieutenant colonel in the US Army during World War II where he was stationed in London and Paris. On November 11, 1950, he married "Pat" Patterson and soon after returned to San Francisco. David was a longtime member of the Civitan Club, Lake Merced Golf Club, UC Berkeley and Lowell Alumni. David retired in 1980, after 40 years in the insurance business. He spent his retirement traveling the world with Pat, volunteering with Travelers Aid at SFO and spending quality time with his family and many friends. David was a loving man of great integrity, he had a wonderful sense of humor and a generous nature. He was an avid sports enthusiast, following Cal, the Giants and the 49ers loyally throughout the years. He enjoyed regular walks on Sawyer Camp Road and sending jokes and stories on his computer to his many loved ones. He always had a smile for everyone he met and a humorous story to tell. A private family memorial service was held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Assistance League of San Mateo and Mission Hospice.

Papa was a very special man and I feel so lucky to have had him as my grandfather. He taught me about love, the importance of family and generosity of spirit. I will cherish my memories of him and will miss him dearly.

Here is a poem that seems very appropriate:

"Fill not your heart with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I've only gone to rest a little while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am now, but as I used to be. Because I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand in your hearts, I've only gone to rest a little while. As long as I have the love of each of you, I can live my life in the hearts of all of you."
