David Patterson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 5, 2024.
Dave Patterson, 72, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on March 2, 2024, at his home in McCandless, PA. He was born on March 13, 1951, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Algerd and Alice Patterson.

Dave graduated from Bishop Boyle High School in Homestead, Pa. and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Clarion University. His fondest memories of childhood were being in the band, and participating in the Boy Scouts of America with his brother Gerry, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Music would prove to be a theme that ran through every aspect of his life. He performed in many oldies bands throughout the years. Groups like Class Reunion, Pace, and Filigree, where he sang, played bass, trumpet, and acoustic guitar. In the last few years he helped found a music program at his church called Lifted.

Dave was a dedicated educator who served as a Carson Middle School music teacher for 35 years, an assistant marching band director for many of those, and the head marching band director for one much cherished year.

He touched the lives of so many students with his passion for music and and the stage. While he drove those around him to rise to the occasion, and "function" to the height of their capabilites, he truly believed that music and the stage belonged to EVERYONE.

He was a natural proponent for inclusion in schools. No one was ever turned away or excluded from his band or his stage productions when he was director. In fact, he went out of his way to gather the students that maybe hadn't found a welcome, or easy acceptance in other areas. He learned their strengths, challenged them (just not always in the gentlest or most PC of ways) and created a place where each could shine as a valued member of his team! He saw potential in every one of those kids, and forced them to see their worth through his eyes.

As much as he enjoyed being front and center when he conducted his concerts or performed on stage himself, he was just as passionate about stagecraft behind the scenes. His numerous plays, musicals, marching band halftime shows, and Carson talent shows couldn't be rivaled. The working carousel, and the year it "rained" (if you know, you know) on the North Allegheny stage, will live on in stage crew legend!!

He took that love of music tech and turned it into his own sound company as well. He used his talents around the city and contracted with the Allegheny County Parks for many years. He was instrumental in making their concerts in the parks possible.

In addition to his career achievements, Dave was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He loved model trains, good food, and doing pretty much anything his grandchildren asked him to! His faith and his family were deeply important to him. He will be missed by all who really knew him.

He is survived by Deborah, his loving wife of 45 years , his children Brian (Lauren) Patterson, Bree (Nicholas) Sudaric, Benjamin (Megan) Patterson, his grandchildren Blake, Max, Rylie, Reah, and Alex, and his sister Marianne (Richard) Mader.

Besides his parents, Dave is preceded in death his brother, Stephen "Gerry" Patterson.

The family will hold a private service to honor and remember Dave's life. In lieu of flowers, a dedication donation can be made to the Hungry For Music charity. Their mission is to put instruments into the hands of educators and students who need them. https://hungryformusic.org/make-a-dedication-donation/

Dave Patterson was a impactful teacher and a great person. Over the course years of his career at CMS, he helped so many students like me find their place in middle school through music. He challenged each of us to be our best and helped us to grow as musicians and as people. His wit and wisdom live on in each of us who were lucky enough to learn from him. May he rest in peace.

Mr Patterson is a huge part of the legacy of North Allegheny music, inspiring many to become music educators and many others to love music and respect the arts. His passion for teaching and excellence will never be forgotten and will live on the lives of music educators of the future! Rest with God, Dear Sir!

I do not know Mr. Patterson, but I just spoke to Mrs. Patterson on the phone about a service she had. I feel led to say this, reading his obituary and speaking to his wife about how our Lord Jesus blessed not only Dave, but everyone he was connected with throughout his life, is truly a blessing that is immeasurable. My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Patterson and her children. May our Lord Jesus bless you in this time of sorrow and give you His peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding.

The Farina Family

March 10, 2024

It was with great sadness and a heavy heart that we heard the passing of Dave Patterson.

Mr. Patterson was a close colleague of our father, Frank Farina, whom helped build an amazing Music Program at North Allegheny for decades. All three of us children had Mr. Patterson for instrumental music classes at Carson Middle School and with the North Allegheny Marching "300". We all respected and appreciated his expectations for his students to strive for excellence not only in the classroom but in life. His quick wit and affable personality are some of our fonder memories of Mr. Patterson. His dedication to his students, love of music and especially his family was only unmatched by his devotion to his faith.
He will be sorely missed. However, his legacy is secure with all those he touched.

On behalf of The Farina Family, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the Patterson Family. May you Rest In Peace Mr. Patterson.
Till we meet again.

Our family was very saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Patterson. As a student I remember the talent show in 8th grade when all the teachers dressed up like California Rasins, and sang and danced to 'I heard it through the grapevine'. When my brother (Mike Cannon) joined the Tech Crew, my brother found his people. Mr. Patterson became like family to my brother. He lived for the moments of building sets, making it 'rain', and running sound. A mentor, teacher, and well-respected father figure, and overall Awesome human being is what I think of when I think of Mr. Patterson. True to his passion of music, family, faith, and students David Patterson left an amazing mark on the world. He will deeply missed and always cherished. Thank you to his wife, children and family for sharing him with. May you find peace in your many fond memories. God Bless you all.

I met Dave in the Summer of 1987 at my first NA Band Camp as a student teacher. At the time I had no idea what an impact he would have on my life and career. Dave was one of my cooperating teachers that Fall. He taught me daily, and tested me often. It's no surprise that many of the lessons learned in that time with him continued to guide me through the years. Dave continued to teach me when I returned to NA in 1991....now teaching me as a colleague - and (most important to me) - as a friend. Some of my most cherished memories are of the behind the scenes stories that we all still tell. Dave always had an opinion or an idea to share, and he was never afraid to speak up. When the chips were down his guidance was steady, a true leader.......and he could make you laugh.....trust me....we laughed A LOT!! Dave was a pivotal figure in our Music Department, and changed the lives of more students than you can count. He helped to mold generations of our best NA alumni.....in all fields....not just Music. He taught everything to everyone. I still saw Dave after his retirement, and we were always able to pick up where we left off the last time we talked......the true measure of a good friend.....Dave....Thanks for being my Teacher and my Friend. You and your Family will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Mum, when I heard the news of a man whom I respected, looked up to and loved had passed I was a bit shaken. Absolutely the best and my favorite teacher/mentor, I could ever have, but I am sure you know that. I now have regret that I hadn't reach out more, and that I didn't check in once in a while. I will drop 2 little stories (of the many) that come to mind when I think about Mr. Patterson (always will be that name to me). The first is, what can say about guy who asks a young man to come and babysit his son Ben for the night. We had so much fun that Ben and I had no clue the Penguins had just won their first Stanley Cup till you two got home. Ben asked for you two to go out again so we could do it all over another time! The second was that I had gotten to Carson and my brother Jesse had told me when I get there that I needed to find Mr. Patterson and introduce yourself. So dummy me found him walked up to him and said "I am a Burello". He commented about how he could really use me on the "Production Team" as he called it then. The one problem was for about 6 month he didn't know my name and would do the usual thing he did with 6th graders like "BURELLO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?!" He didn't know my first name and I was terrified to tell him. HA-HA (I just giggled out loud.) Who would have ever known that I would be the young man who was asked to babysit one of the most important people in his life. As my brother said to Bree on Facebook "...your dad was one of the best" God bless and if you need anything please let me know. I hope to be able to inspire my kids as he did me. Love Dom.

Mr. Patterson: some of my most difficult and stressful times were sitting in your band classes, but you held us to task and we were better musicians it. With the talent show you gave Bill and Paula Brinzer and I a chance to try some new and different comedy. So our "Pest Away" and "Bounty" commercials were not as awesome as Bon Jovi or the Bangles (best talent show ever!) but you gave us memories to last a lifetime and more. Thank you.

Mr.Patterson made such an impact in my life. As my middle school band teacher to my high school marching band director. I could not have asked for a more dedicated and supportive teacher. He will always hold a special place in my heart and will truly be missed. May he be at peace with the Lord.

Mr. Patterson was an amazing man and teacher! He would call. E "cat" and really called all of us cats. Lol. Its been well over 30 years since i saw him, but made an impact on my life to continue with music and band into my life. Some of my favorite memories are that of the Marching 300 or band at NA! God bless you Mr. Patterson! Rest at peace

My condolences go out to Debbie, Brian, Bree, Ben and their families. As the former band director of Ingomar Middle School, Flag team sponsor and Assistant Director of NA´s marching band, I had the opportunity to work with Dave. He is famous for his half-time show featuring giant moving wagon wheels from the late 1980´s, (IYKYK) , and the rain scene from "Singing in the Rain" at NA high school for the school musical. He was very passionate about teaching his students and his Tech Crew.

Mr. Patterson welcomed me into band and stage crew in middle school. My friends and I spent many nights at school board meetings advocating for him to be the Marching band director, (We were a very loyal group). We lost touch after high school but he was still a topic of conversation in our lives. He had a profound and life changing effect on me and my best friend. Gave us opportunity and a sense of ownership on projects we worked with him on. He may have been tough on the outside and sometimes harsh but he really did help me break my bad attitude and do better in school and in turn life. I appreciate this man and all the times we had 20+ years ago. Rest in Peace Mr. Patterson. You´ll be missed.

Still remember a performance of Beauty and the Beast at Central Catholic. Couldn´t understand how our neighbor playing the Beast could speak in such a deep voice. Then ran into David and he explained the amazing technology he was using to make it happen. We didn´t have an opportunity to spend a lot of time getting to know David. But the chances we did have left no doubt he was a kind and caring person who will be missed by his family and friends. Be assured you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
