David Rothgeb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 26, 2024.
GO BIG OR GO HOME! David Rothgeb was never one to do anything half-assed. He had a big personality and an even bigger heart. Generous to a fault, he made friends wherever he went and wanted to help those he cared about (which was most).

The youngest child of Arthur and Henrietta Rothgeb, David was born on February 9th, 1948, and raised in the wheat fields of Northern Oklahoma. He drove combines and sports cars, and the latter was a passion that was never extinguished. His cherished siblings were Rita Foster, Leroy Rothgeb, Helen Reeves, and Dorie Behar.

David loved and was loved deeply by his family. In 1971, at only 23 years old, he married Barbara Hanson, the love of his life for over 53 years. Barbara was a widow, so he became an instant father to her daughters, Kirsten and Corbyn. The welcome birth of Randall rounded out the family. He included their eventual spouses: Erik Press, Mimi Atkinson, Nada Kostolova, Larry Hightower, and Ian Wittig. Peak pride was achieved with the arrival of his seven grandchildren: Rainer, Olivia, Maxine, Ezekiel, Sebastian, Molly, and Sam.

David's career took him through the ranks of the food business and many moves across the country. He eventually landed in New York City as the publisher of Supermarket News. He marveled at how different this world was from Ponca City, Oklahoma.

David was known everywhere he lived for the de facto bike shops he set up in his garage and the rides he led exploring every region and neighborhood. His role as president of the Dallas Bike Club brought many of his treasured friends. Even in his last days, he still clocked many miles on his bicycle. He was a natural leader and loved to share his joy in driving and riding fast.

David made a point about connecting with people. He cultivated lifelong friends who made trip after trip to see him, especially during the last two years as he battled leukemia in Palm Springs and at the City of Hope Hospital. This support was a testament to how he showed up for everyone in his life.

There were countless adventures in David's life, and some of his favorites were traveling to Egypt and Africa, attending an industry party at Versailles in France, visiting Vienna, Prague, Rome, and Buenos Aires, sailing to Guatemala, and cycling some of the most beautiful roads in America. He was still planning trips, and the next was to visit a granddaughter studying in Scotland. His sense of adventure was strong and never waned for a moment.

David didn't stop, EVER. Although cancer eventually outpaced him, he did not surrender the race. He was going big until he was called home. This home for him is rooted in the Catholic faith, which he held close throughout his life. If you want to embrace his spirit, it's easy to do so. Turn a stranger into a friend, offer a helping hand, show up for people, and get in action-move swiftly on a hike, a bike, or a sports car. Play your music loudly and feel the wind in your hair. Go big or go home.

A memorial fund has been established in his memory at the City of Hope through the Fireflies West Cycling Club: https://ourhope.cityofhope.org/davidrothgeb

I can relate to all of the comments here about David. He was truly unique in nature and temperament. A kind man for sure with a new story to share. The kind of friend you could pick up with where you left off, regardless of the intervening time parameter. I have many memories of the good times we had together and with Lynda and Barbara.
Thinking about it I would say David was not only my friend, but he was also always, an Event! I mill miss him very much but never forget him.
I hope you are reading these David, from those who loved you.

It´s hard to believe that a person as full of life as David was could no longer be with us. To be honest I was very unprepared for the news as I simply thought that David would cheat death yet again as he had done so many times in his life of fast cars and bikes. I´ll never forget how happy he was to sell his old Audi 5000 to me for $1 after wrapping the front end around a tree (I think). Besides his generosity I think part of his joy was the excuse to go buy another car! Nobody was a stranger around David including us neighborhood kids back in Westport CT. You always knew where you stood with David when you were his friend. Big hugs to Barbara and the entire family.

The sadness is very big in my heart.
We will miss you Dave.
We are sad for your wonderful loving family, whom you loved so much.... And who loved you back!
But my heart is also very grateful!
We were able to come see you, just two weeks before you left.
Ed and I will always be so glad that we had that time with you!
We visited, went to eat together and gave you huge hugs goodbye!
Enjoy heaven Dave!

David was a force of nature for sure.
He could fill a room with his presence and made friends with every stranger.
He could embarrass and harass you but would take a bullet for you in a heartbeat. Every place he lived or visited, every car he drove, every bike ride he took was a peak experience for him. He lived and loved fiercely and the stories he left will be remembered and shared for a long, long time.

Even though I knew Dave´s passing was eminent I was still saddened to hear of his passing. As we are in this season of Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting on the many years I was fortunate enough to know him. From the moment we met in the first grade at St Mary´s School in Oklahoma, through all the years, jobs, and milestones in his life, he was a constant presence in my life - a friend whose presence never wavered.
I have such fond memories of our time together, from racing cars to sharing countless laughs. Daves zest for life, his love of speed, and the joy he found in every moment was truly special. I am grateful to have witnessed his happiness, especially when he met Barbara, his lovely wife. It was clear how much they meant to each other and their great family.
As we give thanks this season, I am grateful for the friendship we shared and the many memories Dave gave me. He will always hold a special place in my heart and I know his legacy will live on in all who knew him.
Please know my thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Wishing you comfort and peace.

My heartfelt condolences to Barbara and the family. I´m deeply sorry for your loss. David will be missed by so many of us. I´ll always remember him as someone full of energy and life. The image that often comes to mind is of him cruising down Mesquite one day on his three-wheel bike, waving enthusiastically and flashing that big unforgettable smile as he passed my home on Buena Vista.
David had a presence that was truly larger than life. The moment he entered a room, he filled it up. I can still hear his resounding voice and his unforgettable laugh. He was always warm and welcoming, with a generosity that knew no bounds. I was fortunate to be on the receiving end of his kindness more than once.
It felt so unfair to see him in a weakened state during my last visit, but even then, his love for life and his devotion to his family shone through. Above all else, what stands out to me is how deeply he lived and how fiercely he adored his family shone through
Peace be with you. Judith

When my wife went through some cancer surgery I had not known Dave that long, but we had quickly become friends and he was one of the first people to call afterwards to see how things had gone. He cared.
Later I had run in to some challenges at the bike shop during the Covid period, business was busy and staff were off. I needed some help to do some deliveries and asked Dave if he could help me out. There wasn't a moment of hesitation, "Tell me when to be there and I will do whatever you want" he was true to his word.
I will miss you buddy.

So long, David. We connected during our days at Supermarket News and remained friends for the rest of the long ride.
Nascar or F1? We debated the merits of left-turns-only on more than one after-work drives up the Merritt Parkway to Connecticut.
We reconnected wonderfully some years back as we shared tips and gripes about our blood cancer journeys. You were an inspiration for me and I tried my best to reflect that back to you.
Wish we had just a little more time, my friend, cause the times we had were good.

Met David about 10+ years ago at a boxing class by chance. I enjoyed speaking with him and learning about the advertising and marketing industry over the years, and more importantly some important life lessons. David lived a full life and will be missed. I extend my prayers and condolences to his family and friends.

I always enjoyed David´s laughter and fun spirit at our sales conferences. He had great business wisdom, and we all looked to him for his insight. May God wrap His loving arms around the entire family . May David bask eternally in the glory of his Saviour.

Met David a few years ago. We hiked a bit and had a few lunches together. I enjoyed hearing about his life. He got a kick when I told him I knew about Supermarket News. My dad was a grocery man and meat cutter. David was sympathetic and understanding of my son's situation and I will be forever grateful for that!

One of my favorite stories happened on a bike ride. My husband Val Phelps, who passed away of the same cancer in June of 2023, stashed some huge nuts from a big light post in David bike bag. They probably weighed 8 lbs. once the ride was over Val was teasing him about riding slow. Then he pulled those huge nuts out of his bag. I had a great photo of that moment but I can´t find it. They were both laughing so hard. Rest in peace my friend

When my husband passed away last year (a partner during their food magazine publishing days), David called every so often to check on me. A few days ago, he called me so say he was soon going to pass over and did I have any words I wanted him to tell Ray. What a sweet man!

I didn´t know this man for a long time, but you could tell he was a kind and welcoming individual when you stepped into the room. A warm smile and a few jokes was all I needed to know he was loved by many and lived a life only he could live. Condolences to the family, may peace fill your hearts and your homes this holiday season.

I met David about 44 years ago - My sister, Ruth, was Kirsten´s best friend at Winter Park junior high - and he was the same loving, funny, gregarious character til the end. Sending so much love to all of you.
