David Lee Smith 80, of Woodbridge, VA died on July 21st, 2024. He was born in Roswell, NM to Leroy and Cecile Smith on September 13, 1943. When he was 12 years old, he represented New Mexico in the Little League World Series where they won that year's championship. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern New Mexico University and his doctorate from George Washington University. In 1966 David married Karen Rosseisen from Shorewood, WI where they met volunteering during college with the Lutheran Church.

After honorably discharged from the Marine Corp in1968, he became the Coordinator of Pupil Personnel Services for the Quantico School System until 1976 when he became the Assistant for Graduate Education, Dependent Education and Youth Programs, Department of the Navy. In 1979 he became the Deputy Director of the Navy Family Support Program where he helped establish a worldwide network of Family Service Centers. In 1989 until retirement, he was the Deputy Director of the Human Resources Division of the Marine Corps. He received the Department of the Navy's Superior Civilian Service Award.

Volunteer activities included President and member of the Prince William County Board of Social Services; coaching and refereeing for PWSI; and President of INSIGHT, Inc., the first residential program for persons with disabilities in the area. He was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Springfield.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Karen and three children, Stephen (Jennifer) Smith, Laura (Anthony) Albanese and Michael (Jillian) Smith; eight grandchildren, Adeline, Luke, Carly, Maxwell, Maggie, Lillian, Landon, and Reagan.

Graveside services will be at Quantico National Cemetery, Monday, August 12 th at 10:45 am.
