Receiving an email reminder that the 3rd anniversary of your husband's passing is approaching. Thinking of you & your family & the loss you continue to bear, also including the loss of your son a short time after. Your husband, my late husband's surgeon at B & W in 2011 took away so many of my & my husband's fears with his caring bedside manner. Wishing you strength to go forward each day carrying your husband's shining light within you.

Receiving an email reminder that it's the 2 year anniversary of Dr. Sugarbaker's passing, I am brought back to B & W & his valiant attempt to extend my late husband's life in late 2010, albeit it was not meant to be. What he was able to give us each day was hope to hang onto, & not only by his surgical skills but by his exceptional bedside manner that uplifted us at a time we needed it most. He was the light in the dark for us & is what gave my husband & I the ability to cope with the devastating diagnosis of mesothelioma. I am thinking of The Sugarbaker family during this time & wishing you healing as you continue to mourn the loss of a truly humane physician.

My husband and I think of Dr Sugarbaker often throughout the year with great appreciation and gratitude. There are no words that could possibly express what we feel so deep in our hearts. David came to our rescue when our darkest cloud covered our family and friends. Bless David and his family for all they do to help their fellow beings. Truly special angels among us. Thank you!

We just learned of the passing of Dr. Sugarbaker and are indeed heart broken. He saved my husband's life in 2011 and it's because of this incredibly talented and compassionate surgeon that he is still sharing his precious life with me, his family and many friends. We owe so much to his expertise and dedication to thoracic surgery. We will never forget him and will be eternally grateful for his gift to us. Our deepest sympathy to his wife and family. May David be blessed with eternal peace.

Dr. Sugarbaker's passion for patient care was infectious to everyone around him. It was evident everyday that I worked with him. He provided "hope" for many who had no hope when they arrived in the office. He may be gone, but his Legacy lives on in the tens of thousands of lives he touched, from patients, families, physicians, nurses, anyone who crossed his path. Thank you Dr. Sugarbaker.

Over 25 years ago we lost our Dear Father to mesothelioma. Fast forward over 30 years and our family was rocked again with the news that my eldest brother had been diagnosed with the same evil condition.
Just when things seemed hopeless, Dr Sugarbaker entered the scene and my brother was given new life. We thanked God and we will eternally be grateful to the good doctor for helping us keep my Dear Brother in our lives. Peace to the memory of this great healer.

Dr Sugarbaker saved my life when I was a 38 yo father of two that had little hope. 14 years later I am here & will never forget him. His skills as a surgeon were second to none but beyond that he gave me hope & showed me such amazing compassion. I will never forget him walking into my room and saying "the sun continues to shine on you my friend". May the sun shine on his loved ones & please know that I will never forget him & will forever be grateful.

We were so very sorry to learn of Dr Sugarbaker death. We want to express to his family our gratitude for his important role on research on mesothelioma and as a Thorasic surgeon. It is partly because of him and our dear surgeon Dr. Singhal at University of Penn and his team that my husband who is a little over one year after surgery is able to live a fairly normal life and has hope he would not have had some 7 years ago. We are certain he will be sorely missed in his professional circle. We pray that you will know God's perfect peace at this time and as you walk this journey as family who knew and loved him.Sincerely,Dick and Pam ShellenbergerManheim, PA

I am very sad. My thoracic surgeon, known as a pioneer, Dr. David Sugarbaker died two days ago. He was a great man, a great surgeon, a great leader and mentor who saved many many lives. He was a gentle, kind man. After a disquinished career in Boston, Dr. Sugarbaker joined Baylor/St Lukes in Houston in 2014. He was the Director of the Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine. People came from other countries to seek his help; and patients from MA flew down to Houston for checkups. He will be greatly missed by the medical community of the world. Please pray for his family, friends and the void in the world of thoracic medicine. He will be buried in Massachusetts. Go to Asbestos.com for his obituary. He was 65. Sara Reardon. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be hired to assist Dr. Sugarbaker when he came to Baylor.I considered it the employment jackpot to be able to work with such an esteemed and brilliant surgeon. It was an honor to care for his patients in clinic and I will continue to do so as long as I'm at Baylor. I will never forget what he taught me about clarity of purpose and focused attention. I'm dedicated to his mission to provide hope and find a cure for mesothelioma.

Dear Linda and family,
It was a privilege to know you all from Fort Square Presbyterian Church in Quincy, MA. David's rich voice was a complement to the choir.
On one occasion we met him at BWH and he stopped his conference to speak and comfort to us.
The last time we met up with you all was at your son's graduation from Thayer Academy. Our granddaughter was also graduating.
We had many happy times of fellowship at your home in Milton.
May God our Father continue to comfort you all with His everlasting arms around you. Our heartfelt sympathy.

Dr. Sugarbaker was a humble servant and a gentle giant. I can remember our consultation with him in July 2010- after we had exhausted our previous attempts of treatment with chemo and a clinical trial he offered my husband HOPE! He told us that pleural mesothelioma was incurable but he was offering life extension if my husband was willing. I emailed him personally verbalizing my concerns over the cost since our insurance denied all treatment and he replied back to me in 5 words-dont worry about the money. His compassion and passion to help others was undeniable. His family members sacrificed immensely I imagine, and I thank you for sharing your husband and dad for those of us desperate for a competent, caring physician.

I am a 1976 Mesothelioma Survivor healed by the giant heart, mind, and hands of my beloved Dr. Sugarbaker. I cannot control the weight of my tears which are no greater than those of the reader. Dr. Sugarbaker loved his patients and vigorously fought for us. One time, at a grant presentation, a NIH representative, made the comment that mesothelioma only ravaged 3000 + people @ year; therefore, why should they spend millions for such a low number. Dr. Sugarbaker stood up, face reddened, and pointed to me (patient advocate for grant). He was seething inside & with anger in his brow, said, Doesn't she count? You tell MY patient that her life is not worth it.' He battled for the answers & he demanded the truth. We all know that hope was his favorite prescription. How lucky I am to have known the touch & heart of a healer. May his memory be a blessing to us all. LOVE & tight hugs to Linda & the kids, BWH, Baylor, et al. I am eternally grateful for all of our healers, present, & future, and now, past.❤

Words can not express the hope given to me by Dr. Sugarbaker when I was diagnosed w peritoneal mesothelioma right before Christmas 2008, with 2 children still in high school. He called his brother, Paul in D.C. & spoke with his wife Ilse w me present! Dr. Paul & Ilse; I am SO SORRY for your loss. I wish I could come tomorrow as I'd love to thank you both in person again, but am helping my daughter move. You gave me a second chance at life, & I am trying not to waste it. I had the priviledge of caring for my dying husband this past year, which was a blessing. Know that you & your family will always be in my thoughts & prayers. May our Lord Jesus bless your whole family abundantly. Sincerely, Diane Danahy

I am so saddened by the news of David's death. He literally saved my life, in 2004 when I was diagnosed with lung cancer. In my despair and fear it was his voice saying , Don't worry, I got this that kept me going. His compassion, his optimism, his extraordinary skill, and his counsel changed the course of my life and I am forever grateful to him and to his dear wife, Linda. He will be missed by so many grateful people. My sincere condolences to the whole family.

Dr. Sugarbaker - I feel incredibly grateful that I had the chance to tell you just how much your kindness meant to me. You reached out during a time in my life where I was going through an immeasurable loss. Your legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those whose lives you touched in both big and small ways.
August 31, 2018
Dr. Sugarbaker, words can't express how honored I feel that I can say I worked under your leadership. I've never met a doctor as dedicated to his patients and their care as you did. You truly are one of a kind, and your legacy will live on through each patient whose lives you touched, and every person who was fortunate enough to be led by you. My only regret is not being able to tell you how grateful I was before you transitioned on. My prayers are with your family, friends, colleagues, and the countless patients who are left to mourn such an incredible loss to the world. I pray we all find comfort, and continue to serve others in the same manner that you did all of these years. I will never forget you Dr. Sugarbaker, and I will forever be grateful to God for allowing our paths to cross. We will continue to treat your patients with the same care, compassion, and empathy that you always did. We are all here for such a short time, and hopefully will serve our purpose before our time runs out, you sir have definitely served yours, and I know God is proud. Rest peacefully!
Blessings,

To the family of Dr Sugarbaker...Please know my heart is heavy today as I learn of the loss of your husband, dad, grandfather, etc.
What a GIANT he was in our journey with Meso. He held our hands with loving care, patience, tears and love 2010-2013 in Boston at B&W. To find him was a miracle from HEAVEN.. Not only was he our hope but also a Mid Missouri neighbor which comforted us, he from Jefferson City, us from Eldon, a 30 mile difference. A feel of home when so far away from home for the scariest adventure of our families life. The Sugarbaker name was a household name as I was growing up in Mid Missouri (1956-2000). He was the many of the Sugarbaker's that went on to follow in his Dad's footsteps.
Thank you for sharing him with the world. He comforted many.
RIP Dr Sugarbaker, job well done on earth. Your memory will live on forever.

We met Dr. Sugarbaker on his first day of clinic in Houston, July, 2014 to evaluate my husband's stage 3B esophageal cancer. He subsequently performed an esophajectomy on my husband the following week. Dr. Sugarbaker arrived in Houston exactly when we needed him, and we believe he was literally sent by God. There is no adequate way to express our appreciation to or our admiration for Dr. Sugarbaker. Excellence, commitment, all superlatives. Our sincerest and deepest condolences to his family. He was beloved by many. We will surely miss him.

I am a physician who underwent a radical pleurectomy for mesothelioma three and a half years ago under the care of Dr. Sugarbaker. My wife and I shed tears today with the knowledge of his passing. I owe these past years of my life to his treatment and guidance. Not only was he a most talented and innovative surgeon, but the entire team he developed at Baylor and St. Luke's Hospital was beyond exceptional. He truly gave hope to the hopeless. I'm sure he was a very proud man. He had every reason to be. His accomplishments are legendary. But, I only saw a man who was 100% committed to patient care, who gave me hope and encouragement, after I had been told by several oncologists that there was little to be done. I wasn't privy to the many other aspects of his professional life; the research, the endless conferences and meetings, the politics of academic medicine. He was a maverick, a true medical pioneer, and a giant in a profession that is crying out today for more like him. Rest in peace, doctor. You will be missed and treasured by the thousands you have touched directly and through your teaching. I owe you every breath I take.

To Dr. Sugarbaker's family, He used his gifts as a surgeon along with his compassion to give hope & courage to each patient & family member who battled mesothelioma, including my late husband who was treated at B & W in 2010 by him. I extend my deepest sympathy to you as you grieve the loss of a man who was seen as bigger than life by his patients and his patients' family members. May you be comforted in part by all that he did to try to improve the quality of life for each person he treated. The grief you feel is because his was a life well lived.

The world lost a Giant today... :(
Dr David Sugarbaker was not only the King of Dragon Slayers but one of the top trainers of future Dragon Slayers in the world today !
I can't begin to describe the depth of sadness I feel today. 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with carcinoid tumors in my lungs I thought I was given a death sentence. This man operated on me 3 times, betwee 07 and 08 and with his brilliant hands removed this hideous disease from my lung.......
It took a long time for me to get back on my feet, and realize that I could live a somewhat healthy life all because of this man. Here we are 10 years later and I am still going strong, but This brilliant brilliant man has left this world way before his time.....
Anyone battling NETs knows there is no known cure, and it's probably not a matter of if it will return, but when....
I always felt comfort in knowing that in the event that I had a reoccurrence, I could fly to Baylor and Dr. Sugarbaker would fix me right up!
This man not only single-handedly saved thousands and thousands of lives, but trained thousands and thousands of doctors , to carry on his wisdom in healthcare.
Tens of thousands of mesothelioma patients are alive today because of him...
I feel truly blessed to have been lucky enough to have been referred to him by Dana Gerrson , to be my surgeon, and there is no doubt in my mind that I am alive today because of him!
My thoughts and prayers go out to David Sugarbakers family, his patients, and the world, for we have truly lost one of the most gifted medical minds of our century!
Thank You Dr . David Sugarbaker ❤

To the family of Dr. Sugarbaker, please accept my sympathy for the loss of your husband, dad and brother.
Dr. Sugarbaker treated my husband in 2013. When we first met him it felt like we were face to face with a "Super Hero".
Dr. Sugarbaker was not only the most relevant doctor in the mesothelioma world but he was also a kind, compationate and patient man. He never rushed us through an appointment.
My husband passed away in 2014, after putting up a good fight with Team Sugarbaker by his side!
Be at peace Dr. Sugarbaker you have earned it.

I was a patient of Dr. Sugarbaker and he gave me a chance of living. He did my surgery on March 20, 2017. He was always so thoughtful and caring. The last time I saw him (March 20, 2018) he looked pale and had lost weight. I told him to take care of himself and he said "I'll be alright". And of course, he is alright because he is with our Lord but how I will miss him. All of his family are in my prayers.
