David Swope Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2024.
Beloved brother David Roman Swope passed away on May 12 at the age of 64. He was born on June 6, 1959 which was both D-Day and David Day for our family. He was predeceased by his brother Stuart and parents Dr. Joe and everyone's "other mom" Pat. David is survived by sisters Cathy Swope (Scott Olson) Minneapolis, Dr. Susan Swope (Kerry Luster) and Sally Tague (Dr. Robert Tague); brother Joseph Swope (Cheryl) and many nieces and nephews including Alexander Tague who was with him during his last hours.

If you needed a special paint job or faux finish, you were lucky to get David to do it. He famously made the metal door frames at the Swope lake house look so much like wood you could almost drive a nail into it. He could do the hardest thing with his faux finishing, make patterns look random.

Dave has a big family of cousins who worked, played and loved him and will miss him tremendously. His bandmates were his other family and we're sure he is playing a Poco song with Stuart now.

A celebration of David's life will be held in June.

I am so sorry that I will be out of town on June 29th. I was really hoping to be there to celebrate David's life and toast my friend. He was a great person and my thoughts/prayers remain with his family and friends.

Dave and I first started playing guitar in 7th grade at Chaminade; we wrote our first song in the back of Mr. Van Hee´s study hall class called, appropriately, "Study Hall Blues." A few months ago we played at an open mic, including a song we wrote in the pandemic called "Middle of the USA." Between those bookends, we played a lot of music and had a lot of fun with many friends and family. Dave was a talented guy, a loyal friend and he inspired a lot of people like myself with the gift of music - one that´s passed on to my own kids. Rest in peace, Dave.

Rest in peace, David. So very many happy memories with him. Watching his waterskiing and fireworks expertise at the Swope lake house, rolling out from under any given person´s car fixing it in the Grant Farm Trails´ house driveway, watching the Simpsons and laughing hysterically at his impersonations of the characters, enjoying his talent for cooking (best nachos & vegetarian chili) and watching him jamming countless hours with the guys in the band where his love and talent for music shone brightly. He will be missed. Sending all my love to the family and friends of this sweet soul.

I knew David at high school just as Richard said, and David was always very outgoing and friendly with me. At that time, he made a special effort to help me with my bashfulness that was prevalent for me at that time.

Dave was one of oldest friends. When our family moved to Ste Genevieve MO in 1973 Dave walked over to our house to introduce himself and the rest was history. We learned to play guitar and went through life sharing the highs and lows. He was a brother to me and the O´Donnell´s. My grown children have many good memories of "uncle" Dave. May God bless his soul. He will always have a special place in my heart.

I was high school classmate and hung out with Dave a lot. He was a gem of a person and always treated everyone well. He will be missed by all. I and many other classmates plan on going to his celebration of life. I hope Chaminade sends out an email with details.
