David TICKELL

TICKELL, David
Dave was a lifelong socialist who lived his beliefs about equality and human rights. As a young lawyer in Ontario, he served as legal counsel for unions and other workers. He also made significant contributions to Ontario health and hospital systems. During his ten years as the OMBUDSMAN for Saskatchewan and later as Executive Director of John Howard Society he touched the lives of many, particularly First Nations and Metis people, children and youth, offenders and many disadvantaged groups. He was able to bring about change in areas such as human rights, child protection, labour relations, corrections, privacy and freedom of information, young offenders, and federal-provincial law issues. He shared his expertise with Human Justice students at the University of Regina for more than two decades...teaching his final class on Youth Justice by distance education just last year. His most recent years were spent in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island...he loved the ocean and fishing...always waiting for that big salmon...
Dave's entire family (Sandra Pearce; his children Melanie, Amanda, James, Jennifer, Melissa, Matthew, Sarah; brother Dale; and each of their families) will miss him greatly as will his many friends and colleagues. Born on Feb. 21, 1936, he died of heart failure in Nanaimo, BC on Feb. 7, 2014 . He was a fine man with a great sense of humor...whose life and work made a difference.
