David Towell Obituary
David Joseph Towell, 81, of Akron, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2014.
Dave was born August 24, 1932 in Akron to David and Lorena (Mulson) Towell. He graduated from St. Vincent High School. After serving with the U.S. Army in the Korean War, Dave attended the University of Akron. He graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Upon his father's death in 1960, Dave succeeded him as president of Dave Towell Cadillac, becoming the youngest Cadillac dealer in the country at age 27.
Dave received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in 1973 and 1977. He was appointed to the Ohio Motor Vehicle Dealer Board in 1986, later serving as its president. Dave earned the Master Dealer Award from the Cadillac Motor Division of General Motors Corporation in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 2004. He retired from Dave Towell Cadillac in 2005.
Dave is a proud alumnus of the University of Akron, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Dave served as president of the Lamplighters, Hilltoppers, and the school's national Alumni Association. In 1976, Dave was named an Honored Alumnus of the University of Akron. In 1997, he was awarded the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Akron College of Business.
Dave loved the game of golf. He was the general chairman of the 1977 NEC World Series of Golf tournament. He is a member and past president of Akron Golf Charities, Inc., and member and past president of Akron Golf Charities Foundation. Dave was a member of Fairlawn Country Club, Firestone Country Club, Olde Florida Golf Club (Naples, FL), and Sharon Golf Club.
The only thing Dave loved more than cars and golf was his family. He is survived by Ann, his wife of 51 years; sons David Towell, Michael (Susan) Towell, Daniel (Siobhain) Towell, Timothy Towell, and Thomas (Jennifer) Towell; 14 grandchildren; and sister Patricia Claypool. Dave is remembered fondly by his family and friends, all of whom came to know and enjoy his warm personality and quick Irish wit.

Calling hours will be held Friday, August 15 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 East Exchange Street in Akron. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Avenue in Akron at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs Towell and Family,
I was very sad to learn of Dave's passing. We played golf together frequently at Olde Florida and I consider him to be among the finest true gentlemen and men of real character I have ever known. I can only imagine what the loss of this terrific guy means to the family he was so proud of. I offer my most heartfelt condolences. All of us who knew Dave share in your great sense of loss.

Ann and sons,
Dave was a good man and a gentleman, our neighbor across the street from us at the old Towell building. He stopped over many times with advice, business,and friendship.
He is in a better place now.

Ben & I were so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. You are all in our prayers.
I will miss making my "birthday call" this year to him. Don't think I missed a year since we moved to FL.
He was one of the best bosses I ever had.

Ann and sons...Dave and I go back many years...we first met when I went with my dad to buy a car from his dad...and buying cars from Towell continued for many years. A truly "great guy", a man's man, who "left his mark"!! Always there if you needed, help, a "handout" or a prayer! Due to a previous committment we will be out of town and unable to personally offer our sympathy, however know that Daave and all the family will be in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks Dave for crossing our path of life!! May he rest in peace.

I am saddened to here of Dave's Passing. Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. Dave left his wherever he went. A True "Gentlemen".

I had the pleasure of volunteering with Dave for many years at the golf tournament - always a gentleman and willing to help where ever needed. We often compared notes on his twin sons & my twin grandsons. May your many fond memories of him sustain you during this most difficult time and the years to come.
