DAWN MARIE (ALTOMARI)
On June 4, 2015, Dawn Gideon - wife, sister, aunt, friend, and a force in health care in the Pittsburgh region and on a broader national stage - passed away after a battle with cancer. Dawn was the type of person who never forgot a name or some important component of everyone's life demonstrating her unique impact on everyone she met. A native of Stowe Township, Dawn was a graduate of Sto-Rox High School and the University of Pittsburgh. After her tenure at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health, Dawn began her health care career at Forbes Health System in 1983. While there, never one to shy from a challenge, she was given the responsibility of the in-house consulting company; she promptly reported to management that the best course of action was to shutter the operation. Later, she built and was president of the Wilkinsburg hospital and was instrumental in its creation as the region's first long term acute care hospital. In 1990, she became Forbes CEO and in 1997 merged with Allegheny University Hospitals, only to take a leadership role as they went through bankruptcy a year later. Leaving Allegheny, she started her own enterprise focusing on assisting health care entities that are financially stressed working in multiple states, including time with St. Vincent's Medical Center in New York City. After merging her company with Huron Consulting, she embarked on a long career with Huron that was both satisfying and beneficial to a number of health centers and hospitals across the nation. She took a brief leave from Huron to return to Allegheny and assist in its rescue. While there, she made major strides in care delivery and built relationships that continue to present sustaining advantages. As one colleague recently said, "she played an important role in WPAHS not being sold to a for-profit that would have led to bankruptcy and loss of pensions." Interestingly, Dawn was instrumental in creating an opportunity for the hospice to be housed in West Penn Hospital. The hospice would later play a critical role in her personal health care. After returning to Huron, she embarked on a professional venture to turn around struggling health care centers that took her throughout the country. Most recently her client list included United Medical Center in Washington, DC; a very successful venture and new relationship between a government funded health care agency and a corporate player such as Huron. Dawn is survived by her husband, Kevin Altomari; her brothers, Mark and his partner, Janie, Ron and his wife, Elizabeth, and Gary and his wife, Angela. Though Dawn and Kevin never had children, her nieces and nephews have always played an important role in her life, Steven Kowatic, Tessa Markle, Zachary, Victoria, Courtney, Lucas, Lila, George, Sarah, Joseph, and Noah Gideon; also surviving are her mother-in-law, Lena Altomari; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dr. Howard Markle and Roxanne. She was predeceased by her sister, Michelle Kowatic; mother, Ethel Gideon; and father, Donald "Bud" Gideon. She so loved her work and often said she couldn't understand why people needed hobbies to decompress after work. If you love what you do there is no need to de-stress. Dawn was a knowledgeable, strong, creative visionary and a caring and compassionate leader. She has touched so many lives and will be remembered fondly by countless friends and colleagues. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Sunday and Monday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Tuesday, Mass of Christian Burial St. Paul Cathedral 10 a.m. Remembrances may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Fund - Office of Development, 4818 Liberty Avenue, PGH., PA 15224.

Kevin, sending my sincere sadness in learning of Dawn's passing. I can't imagine how hard this time has been.
I worked with Dawn at Forbes and came to know her as creative, optimistic, collaborative and kind. One of the smartest women I have ever met, but even more important, she brought humor and kindness to her work, even during difficult situations. I have long been grateful to have worked with her and think of her many times after our time together.
I hope you are able to find peace in the face of this terrible loss.

Kevin, we were so saddened to hear about Dawn. The best any of us can do in life is try to make this a better world, show those we love how much we care, and hope that our fleeting presence on this earth has a lasting impact on the lives of others. This is how we'll always think of Dawn and it's certainly part of her legacy. Her laughter, her smile and her friendship are things we will always remember and cherish. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Kevin, we know each other though we've not met. I too attend the Sat. 6p liturgy. I've parked in front/behind you & Dawn on Fifth Ave. many times. I missed seeing this handsome couple recently & wondered. When I saw Dawn's photo I was shocked. I met her through mutual friends over the years at Mullaney's. I am so sorry. I will offer a prayer for you when at St. Paul's.

There are no words to express my heartfelt condolences to Dawn's family for their enormous loss. I can only imagine how you feel as there is a deep hole in the pit of my stomach all day, after hearing of Dawn's loss. I worked with Dawn for a few years and wish I knew her for many more of those years. I will always remember her professional logic and impressive problem solving skills. I knew I could call her to check in with her on anything, no matter how big or how small.I used to call and talk to her during airport runs. She had a profound impact on my boutique Healthcare Business. I feel remorse that I could not say Good Bye to her, as she has helped so many and was there for everyone when they needed her. She always told me to call on her for support when my friends were going through difficult times. I say farewell to the most amazing professional woman I have ever had the pleasure of working along side. May her soul rest in eternal peace. We will miss her beyond any expression of words! Kevin, may you have comfort to know she was a great lady and I hope to be able to emulate her and use her reflection upon me, in the way she carried herself through life!! Kevin, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this most difficult time. Suzy Koenig

I had the pleasure of working with her for several years when I was Chief of Internal Medicine and later Senior Associate Dean of academics at Allegheny Health System. My wife, Polly, and I had the pleasure of socializing with her and Kevin on a number of occasions which we will always remember and cherish. We will miss her -- and may her soul rest in peace. Here is an email I sent to Dawn on May 23rd:

Dawn,

I wanted to let you know that I started in a new position at Kaiser last week. I am very excited about this opportunity although still sad that DMC closed.

I sincerely appreciate all you did for DMC. You are an amazing person and I hope to emulate your qualities as I go forward in my career.

We had our wake for the Hospital last Thursday. It was great to see so many people from the past and have the opportunity to say good bye, as well as reconnect with people who left years ago.

I am sorry that you couldn't be there. i understand that your health is causing you issues. I am sorry for that. I wish you wellness and all the happiness in the world. Unfortunately, life is not fair.

I hope someday that our paths cross again. Until then, I will remain grateful for the opportunity to work with you.

Sincerely, Mary
