DEAN LORICH Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2017.
LORICH--Dean.

It is with great sadness that we note the death of our esteemed colleague, surgeon and dear friend Dean Lorich MD last Sunday. Such an untimely end to such a remarkably accomplished life. Dean Lorich was the Associate Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Service at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Lorich was a remarkable and most respected surgeon and educator to countless medical students, residents and fellows, and friend and "go to" surgeon to many in the medical field. Even more importantly he was a tireless trauma surgeon who through his expertise impacted the lives of thousands of trauma patients. This impact was not just local. He was an innovative surgeon who studied those injuries for which the outcome was least predictable, came up with novel solutions, published extensively, and improved the end result for many patients worldwide. Dr. Lorich was devoted to his family and is survived by his wife Deborah (nee Clark) and three amazing daughters, Tristan (20), Bianca (14) and Tatiana (11) years old respectively. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 18, 12:30pm at "The Riverside", W. 76th St. and Amsterdam Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Dr. Dean Lorich should be made to: Uniform Firefighters Association, 204 East 23rd St., NY, NY 10010, C/O The UFA Widows' and Children's Fund, Checks Payable to UFA Widows' and Children's Fund, Tax ID 13-3047544. www.ufanyc.org/funds/ widows_and_children.php

My wife hit a pothole and went down in Central Park. She broke her clavicle into several pieces. Dr Lorich put her back together. I remember chatting football with him, as I played at Purdue and was a couple years older than him. He told me the stories of when he was rooting through piles of prosthetic limbs in a hospital in Haiti, trying to find the right size for the people who needed them. I liked it. And I remember when this happened and it´s so sad. My best to his family.

Dean, you are in our thoughts on a daily basis as we watch our grandaughters grow and mature. They have your beautiful blue eyes and your ability to persevere even when the challenges are great. You would be so proud of them as well as your wife. She faces daily challenges and also was able to confront them and use all her resources to succeed. We will miss you.. judith and joe clark

You gave me my left shoulder and arm back. You insisted on immediate use of the mechanized chair and you constantly pushed me to excell on the physical therapy front. I can't forget your words you want mediocre results, submit to the pain; you want your full range of motion back, just keep pushing. We butted heads and mentality screamed at each other but I never doubted that you cared. I will never forget you and I'm sure I'll see you up there one day.

Our family is very saddened by Dr. Lorich's untimely death. His gifted skills gave my mom the use of her arm after a serious fall. We will always remember his smiling face and cheerful greetings. Our condolences to his family.
