Dean Nugent Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 10 to Feb. 11, 2024.
Dean James Nugent, 81, of San Diego, CA, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2024. He was born on December 1, 1942, in Binghamton, NY, to John and Mary Nugent. Dean graduated from the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army as a pharmacist, earning the National Service Defense Medal. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. On January 3, 1970, he married the love of his life, Janyce Beland, in San Antonio, TX. Later, they moved to San Diego, CA, where they settled down and welcomed their son, Sean Nugent, in 1972.

Dean was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was known for his kindness, selflessness, and willingness to help. He had a caring heart and gentle nature. Dean would do anything for anyone with a smile on his face. He was a simple man who appreciated the little things in life. His true happiness came from spending time with his family. He would tell everyone about his son and grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.

Dean was a beloved pharmacy manager at Kaiser Permanente for over 30 years. During that period, he was a valuable member of the Retail Clerk Union. In a true testament to his personality, he sang "Light My Fire" by The Doors at his retirement party in 2001. A devout Catholic, Dean was involved at church and attended mass weekly. He was faithful and charitable, living out Christian values each and every day. He was a world traveler who took many trips and visited countless countries. Most frequently, he enjoyed going on cruises. Dean was also a history aficionado and genealogy expert. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and had a particular affinity for St. Patrick. Lastly, dogs held a special place in his heart, especially Labrador Retrievers.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Nugent; his parents-in-law, Eddie and Ida Beland; his brother, Gerald Nugent; his brother-in-law, Richard Beland; and his sister-in-law, Jane Nugent. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janyce Nugent, of San Diego, CA; his son, Sean Nugent, of Oceanside, CA; his three grandchildren, Katherine, Anne, and Joseph Nugent of Oceanside, CA; his brother, William Nugent, of Phoenix, AZ; his sisters-in-law, Sonja Beland of Poquoson, VA, and Mary Anne Nugent of Suffern, NY; and nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends all across the country.

A memorial mass for Dean will be held at St. Therese Parish on March 1, 2024, at 1:00 PM. The address is 6400 St. Therese Way, San Diego, CA 92120. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please feel free to spread the word. He will be laid to rest at Miramar National Cemetery in a private ceremony beforehand.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. The tribute page for Dean can be found using the link below. His family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Lantern Crest Senior Living, Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center, and VITAS Healthcare.
