Dean Wakefield Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 19, 2016.
Dean was given the gift of music which he loved to share by playing in the lobby of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and making CD's to give away. He taught band in the Anaheim School District in California for many years and was very successful with his South Junior High and Katella High Bands winning many competitions. He also taught Band in Bountiful High School and Wasatch Jr. High.
He was always hard working and had many kinds of work experiences which got him through his education and supplemented his teaching career-delivering newspapers, milkman, carpenter on the Disneyland Bear Theater to name a few.
Dean was very organized and "traveled light." He had very few possessions or clothes but lots of neckties-beautiful and humorous. He never kept anything that wasn't worthy of keeping-books, music, movies. He loved reading. Especially he loved reading The Book of Mormon-always several chapters each day. He knew a lot about literature, composers, and the old movies, which he loved to share. He was an usher at the Southeast Theater in Sugarhouse when he was in his teens.
He graduated from the University of Utah where he received his bachelor and master degree, almost completing his doctorate in composing and arranging music. He was very close to his professor Leroy Robertson who he looked upon as a father figure.
He was artistic and learned to use the computer to create his own CD album booklets. He was an avid Journal keeper and always kept it up to date with his very interesting life. It is bound in four volumes and copied on to CD's for his posterity. . He loved to take pictures sharing them with people and putting them in his journal.
He loved to grow roses and had many kinds in his yard on Melbourne Street and other homes.
He had a great sense of humor and he loved to make Pat laugh every day.
One of his greatest joys was working in the Salt Lake Temple for about 37 years. He had a very close relationship to his Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ and loved serving them. He went on a three year mission to Uruguay as a young man, served in the temple translation department, served as a host in the Welfare Square Dairy, and went on a two year mission to the Spain Madrid Temple with his wife Pat.
He loved spaghetti and salad at Olive Garden (where many of the employees were like family). He and Pat would go there every Friday after attending an early session in the Jordan River Temple after his health made it hard to give full service in the Salt Lake Temple.
Family get togethers with Pat's family as well as his and Christmas were always important to him. He loved his families and grieved at not being able to be close to all of them. The first: Peggy, James, Sally, Ron, and Wendy. The second: Melody, Calleane, Mark, and Michael. However, he found peace with Pat.
Dean never really knew his father, William Ole Harris, so when he entered the Coast Guard he had his surname legally changed to Wakefield and considered himself the son of his mother's first husband, George Fleming Wakefield who did visit him on occasion and said that he wished Dean was his son. His mother was Ellen Olena Petersen--better known as Ella Wakefield.
Dean was born May 3, 1928 in Salt Lake City and passed away May 19, 2016 In Aspen Ridge West Transitional Rehab, Murray, where he was lovingly cared for while suffering terribly with pneumonia. He was very childlike and humble while enduring this last illness, never complaining but trying hard to recover for Pat. He will be buried in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park not too far from where his mother, Ella Wakefield, and brother, Dwight, and one sister, Fay Brophy, and beloved nephew Ronald Long and other relatives are.

A funeral will be held on May 24, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Cottonwood 2nd Ward building, 2080 E 5165 S (Donelson Lane), with a viewing to be held from 10:00-10:45am.

Sometime in the year prior to Mr. Wakefield's passing, I found myself in the lobby of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building where he was playing. Something about his playing stood out for me, so I took a break from my busy day to sit in one of those fine chairs and listen to him play. After several songs I approached him between songs to think him for his playing. In appreciation of my complement, he gave me a CD of his playing, which I accepted and put in my car.

Not being particularly fond of "religious" music as performed by most self-styled spiritual-oriented "artists", it was several weeks before I listened to the CD. What a pleasant surprise. Since then I have listened to it dozens of times, including for the second time this morning. His arrangements are interesting without being over-done, and his touch is exquisitely sensitive. I don't know where he recorded the CD, but the piano is in excellent tune (I used to tune pianos for a living) and the ambiance is flawless. His years of dedication to music and his religious beliefs are reflected in this set of recordings!

On more than one occasion it has occurred to me that I wanted to buy some CDs from him to share, even to take some MP3s of these recordings to Deseret Book and suggest they get the rights to distribute this these recordings for a small royalty. I wouldn't be surprised if this small gift blesses my life for years to come. Thank you for your humble generosity, Mr. Wakefield!

Dean was a delight when we had family get togethers. Enjoyed his wit and musical talent. He was a fruitful servant.

I knew Mr. Wakefield as the Bountiful High Band Director for the 1976-77 school year (Mr. Wakefield's last year at Bountiful High). A cordial, friendly upbeat man who enjoyed music, he shared his love of music with his students. Always wearing a sport coat and tie, he kept his mustache well trimmed and had fun with the ties he wore.

Mr. Wakefield made sure the band competed outside Utah. It was important to him that we saw bands outside of the state. We went to Pasadena California that year, stayed with local band students and of played in the Main Street Parade at Disneyland. He encouraged parent participation as band supporters and felt it to be crucial to the success of the band.

We all knew he loved the Temple just by his off hand comments about attending temple sessions. He would have been happy to have visited every temple in the world if he had a chance. He attended a very early morning session at the Los Angeles temple while on the Southern California band trip and was back by the time we finished breakfast.

A couple of years after he left Bountiful High, I was walking down 4th North in Bountiful and came across Mr. Wakefield walking the opposite direction. He greeted this young man as an old friend. That was classic Dean Wakefield. I am glad to have known him!

I am so grateful that my Aunt Patricia- "Pat" as Dean called her- found her Eternal Companion and that they were able to spend so many happy years together serving the Lord. Grateful that Dean was able to share his beautiful talent that we all will be able to continue to enjoy and that he was able to play his most touching arrangement of "Our Savior's Love" at Mom's funeral 2 years ago.
Heartfelt condolences to family and friends of Dean.

I had the blessing of helping taking care of Dean, and getting to know he and his amazing wife Pam this last month. He shared with me beautiful memories he and his wife shared together. One night I asked him if he had a million dollars and he could chose one place in the world to go with his wife where would it be? He was holding Pam's hand and said "Madrid" and they both talked of their mission/stay in Madrid. After that he asked if I enjoyed music, and gave me one of his cd's. He is so talented on the piano, and my whole family enjoys his music. I'm truly heartbroken, but am glad he is no longer sick. But flying high in the heavens and looking down on us all. I've been thinking of him and Pam and their whole family often the last two days. And I want to say I'm so sorry for your loss, and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. It was such a pleasure and a blessing to have been graced with his presence, and getting to know he and his amazing wife. You could feel the love they have for one another, and I admire their strength and conviction. Not one time did she leave his side, she was there every night helping and just loving him. And I know that love will continue until they meet again!
