Debra Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 25, 2025.
Debra Jean (Coffey) Powell (née Gulledge) passed away on December 2, 2024 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Florida after fighting a multi-year battle with metastatic breast cancer and more recently, complications of opioid use after a knee replacement.

Deb (age 73) was born on August 22, 1951 in Portland, Oregon to Charles Raymond Gulledge and Yvette Clara (née Kiefer) Gulledge, both now predeceased. She married her high school sweetheart, Edward Coffey, in Flint, Michigan, and together they were blessed with two handsome and talented sons, Casey Ray and Carey Lee.

Her second marriage to Richard Austin Powell in 1980, found her in sunny Cape Coral, Florida, far away from the harsh Michigan winters.

Deb will be remembered for her outgoing, warm personality and her tenacity and creativity in providing for her family. In Cape Coral (Del Prado Mall) she was the owner of "Headlines Family Haircutters" for many years. She also was a licensed Real Estate associate with several local realtors. She even received her commercial driver's license (CDL) and enjoyed a short stint as a long-haul trucker with her son, Casey; and, enjoyed occasional limo driving for a dear friend.

Deb is also predeceased by her husband Richard Powell (2013). Survivors include her devoted brother Dorian Gulledge (Sue) of Cape Coral, Florida; also her children, Casey Ray Coffey (grandson Christian Rain and granddaughter, Summer Love) of Flint, Michigan; and, Carey Lee Coffey (Jennifer) of Los Angeles, California, more recently Cape Coral.

A very special thanks to her loyal friends that rallied by her side during her final days.

Cremation arrangements were made through Ballard Bros. Funeral Home, Cape Coral, Florida.

I first met Deb in the late 1970's, she was my talented hair stylist. Later I met her brother, Dorian, who came to town for a visit, and he never left. He and I dated for two years and we got married in 1980, the same year she married Richard Powell, so we each earned a second husband that year. She liked to tease I was her OLDER "sister" (but only by 5 months and then she would "catchup" with me and the teasing would stop). She was a go-getter and loved her swimming pool time, her time of solace. Deb is already greatly missed. What a beautiful soul!

I first met Deb at the Yacht Club pool in Cape Coral. She was funny and had a zeal for life. We quickly became friends and spent many days at the pool together laughing and talking and having fun! I am missing her so much! She was a true and caring friend and I loved her like a sister!! Cyndee Gamery
