Dena Meyers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2009.
MEYERS DENA B.
Peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2009, after a six year struggle with brain cancer, age 64, of Squirrel Hill. Beloved wife of Barton Meyers; mother of Nathan and Katie Meyers; sister of Amy Baker, Sue Berlove and Nancy Berlove; also survived by 9 nieces and nephews. Dena was an activist for civil rights and women's causes, marching in numerous demonstrations all her life including the 1963 civil rights march in DC where she witnessed Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech. She was also a leading plaintiff in the lawsuit Samuels et al v. University of Pittsburgh et al which overturned a PA rule which held that a women's residency status for tuition purposes was determined by that of her husband. After earning Masters Degrees in History and in Education, Dena taught as a reading specialist in the Pittsburgh Public School and for many years at the Pittsburgh Intermediate Unit. While there, she was instrumental in organizing the IU teachers for the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers (PFT) and served for many years as their union representative on the PFT executive board. For most of her career, Dena taught at St. Benedict the Moor School in the Hill District where she worked tirelessly to integrate the IU program with the school's activities. Friends received at McCABE BROS., INC. FUNERAL HOMES, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm, where a family service will be held on Wednesday at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Forbes Hospice, 115 S. Neville St., Pgh., PA 15213.

Dena was a beautiful woman, great wife and a wonderful mother. She always knew how to make everyone feel special regardless of who they were. She made a difference every day while sharing the gift of reading with those less fortunate. She will be greatly missed. My condolences to the Meyers family.

Bart,

My deepest sympathies and condolences on Dena's passing. Those years in Pittsburgh in the 1960s were good times and Dena was always at the centre of our fun and campaigns.

Nate, I am so sorry. My condolences to you and your family. Your mom was always good to me in high school and after and she will be missed. I'm a phone call away if you need someone to talk to. I know we have lost touch over the years but I will always be a phone call away.
