Dennis Carr Obituary

Dennis M. Carr 1941 - 2016
Retired Utica Police Officer
DEERFIELD - Dennis M. Carr passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, with his family and friends by his side.
He was born on the "longest day of the year", June 21, 1941, in Utica, NY, the youngest child born to the late James and Mary Louise (Windheim) Carr. He was predeceased by his "second mom", Edith Carr, and by his mother-in-law, Elaine Kulesza. He loved to play cards with his mother-in-law who always won!
He is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Bonnie (Kulesza) Carr. He is also survived by his cherished children, Dennis M. (Lisa) Carr, James (Mandy) Carr, Christopher Carr and Margaret Carr, along with their mother, Juanita, who all reside in British Columbia. Dennis leaves behind his grandchildren residing in British Columbia, Jasmine, Dalton, Savanna, Danica, Garrett, Clayton, Darcy, Lyndsi and Charity; his sisters, Patricia Carr-Boza, Florida and Mexico, and Jane (Gary) Philipson, New Hartford; sister-in-law, Jackie Moore, Sauquoit; brother, Ralph (Gail Bullock) Moore, Sauquoit; and was predeceased by his brothers, James Carr and Robert Moore, and brother-in-law, Pablo Boza. Also surviving are two nieces, Jenai and Angel, and the "fur children", "Bad Boy" Barley, Thumper, Mario and Molly.
Dennis graduated from Utica Free Academy and later from MVCC with a degree in Criminal Justice. On August 3, 1964, he joined the Utica Police Force as a beat cop, was then promoted to Sgt. Detective, assigned to the Burglary Squad, and later promoted to Lieutenant in the Uniform Division. He was the firearms instructor for many years, graduating from the FBI Shooting Academy, Peeksville, NY, and was recognized as one of the best firearms shooters in Central New York. In 1970, he was a silver medalist in the NYS Police Olympics and won numerous competitions on the East Coast. He also was the force's bomb technician, graduating from the U.S. Missile and Munitions Center at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1984, he was inducted as the Rae Candee Policeman of the Year. He retired from the Utica Police Department after 29 years of service. He then worked for 10 years with the Oneida Gaming Commission as a Gaming Inspector, finally retiring in 2003. He was also an inventor and was proud of the fact he patented his idea for "Ammo Can Organizers", which was a big success. Dennis is retired from the U.S. Army Reserve being stationed at the Elihu Root Center and was very proud to serve his country. Dennis enjoyed his free time shooting, trap shooting, visiting with friends, going to breakfast or sitting on his front porch with his wife watching the wildlife and the sunsets. He is a member of the National Rifle Association, past member of the Trenton Fish & Game Club and the West Canada Fish & Game Club.
The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to the caring and compassionate staff at St. Elizabeth's Progressive Care Unit-4A, especially nurses Stephanie and Hallie, and to Dr. Dilip Kachare for his understanding, caring and ability to listen. Dennis had many friends, but a special word of appreciation goes out to Jim Hancock, Andre Wrobel, Theresa Girouard and cousin, Bob Bozek, for their support to Dennis and his wife.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call Monday from 4-6 p.m. at Myslinski Funeral Home, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart & St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Remembrances in Dennis' name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Humane Society of Herkimer County. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
