Dennis Houlihan, 70, of
Freeport, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was lovingly cared for in his final days by his devoted life partner, Jaye Loffgren. A Renaissance man with a creative spirit and a fierce sense of justice, Dennis lived a rich and varied life full of curiosity, talent, and heart.
Born on January 19, 1955, Dennis was known from a young age for his sense of fun and adventure-riding a unicycle, practicing gymnastics, and performing as a lovable, old-fashioned clown, Yodi, performing magic tricks and making balloon animals at events, even the World Pork Expo. Over his lifetime, he embraced many trades and passions. He became a master basket weaver, trained with members of the (check : Penobscot tribe) in Maine; co-owned a comic book shop with his friend Dan; and worked for many years as an expert carpet layer. Later, he taught himself web design and sales, became a soap maker and fiber artist, and most recently, crafted beautiful stained glass pieces.
Dennis was a lifelong learner and an avid reader-especially of mystery novels. He was a devoted fan of British television and had a sharp wit and strong political convictions. He never hesitated to speak out for what he believed in, especially regarding social justice, human rights, and public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. He cherished the opportunity to travel to Ireland twice, connecting deeply with his heritage.
Above all, Dennis was most proud of the family he built and nurtured. He was a dedicated caretaker to his late wife, Molly, and a loving stepfather to Liz (Brian) Willham of Cedar Rapids, Katie Denniston of North Liberty, and Brandon Moore of Cedar Rapids. He was a proud grandfather to Callie, Grace, and Beatrix. Nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by family.
In recent years, Dennis shared a deep and joyful companionship with Jaye Loffgren. Together, they found peace in the rhythm of daily life-walking to the waterfall in Krape Park, tending their flower gardens, and watching the many birds that visited their feeders. Dennis had a keen eye for birds and could identify countless species; his yard became a small sanctuary. Jaye brought love, stability, and joy to his life, and cared for him with patience and devotion through his final chapter.
Dennis was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harold "Hap" and Harriet Houlihan, and by his sister-in-law, Beth Houlihan.
He is survived by his siblings: John Houlihan of Kansas City, MO; Eileen (Michael) Kelley of Madison, WI; and Cathy (Bo) Houlihan-Norris of Maine. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will remember his humor, creativity, and compassionate heart.
A celebration of life open house will be held on Sunday August 31st from 1:00 - 4:00 with remarks and sharing of memories at 2:00 at the on the second floor of the Veterans Coliseum in Marshalltown, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family recommends acts of peaceful protest or donations to
