Dennis Murphy Obituary

Dennis Patrick Murphy, born April 8, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, in Blue Springs, Missouri.

Dennis is lovingly remembered by his wife, Melinda Murphy; his children and their spouses, Megan and Jacob Cox, Blythe and Kevin Reaves, and Ethan and Erin Murphy; and eight grandchildren, Grace, Patrick, Ashton, Danielle, Jameson, Morgan, Christian, and Kara. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the parish council at St. John La Lande Catholic Church. Dennis also gave generously of his time as a volunteer at the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, sharing his passion for history with countless visitors. Dennis was known for being wise and kind, but his sense of humor will be missed most of all. A funeral Mass will be held on February 8th, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. John La Lande Catholic Church in Blue Springs, MO, with visitation at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World War I Museum.

Beyond a doubt, Dennis was one of the good guys. Seven years ago
he took me under his wing at the WWI Museum and treated me like

I worked with Dennis at the Museum. I am one of the younger members of the staff. Dennis was always kind and very happy to see everyone. One day, an Exhibit on the Vietnam War came to the Museum. Never before had an exhibit on the Vietnam War been displayed in a national museum. It was so intense, that we had tissue boxes placed throughout the exhibit. I myself being born after the war, didnt feel like i had a right to claim i knew anything about the Vietnam War. After all, I volunteered with a lot of people who went over. Nonetheless, Dennis encouraged me to see the exhibit. I went through the exhibit.. and then again, and then again. And then one particular day, I exited feeling like I had seen enough. I just so happened to run into Dennis right then. He asked me what I thought of the exhibit. I told him..that after all the looking and studying and researching.. that i just "didn't understand". Without skipping a beat, he looked me straight in the eyes and said "Well that's okay.. I went over and came back, and i dont understand it either".... I could have cried right then and there. I cry writing this. Thank you Dennis. For making me feel welcome in this life, and making me feel better in a world that can be unforgiving. You wont be forgotten.

I worked with Dennis occasionally at the "Museum" and always found him to be outgoing and friendly.So very sad to hear of his passing.Life is so short.

Dennis gave me my first tour when I started working at the National WWI Museum and Memorial in 2014. Dennis was always so warm and caring. He made a positive impact to hundreds, if not thousands, and will be greatly missed. Hugs, Debbie

My Grandpa Dennis Murphy, he had a great effect on everybody who he had met had if it been tours of the museum or if you had just met him. He would always make people laugh even if it was at inappropriate times. He would love to tell people stories and always come up with something to talk about. His favorite photo that he would never skip on is where me and him had a similar smile and we looked alike. A Hero and Biggest Sherlock Holmes fan in existence. Always had a smile on his face and would always be a great Son/Father/Grandpa and Friend. Always will be in our Hearts and Memories, Never to be forgotten and Deeply missed.

As a cousin, spending the weekend several times during the year, he would take me to play tennis and shoot hoops at the nearby school /park playground. We always had the best pizza delivered for dinner. I think I always had a bit of a crush on Dennis as my handsome cousin! He was very kind and considerate. He will be missed.

So, so sad to hear of Denny's passing. We were next door neighbors for more than three decades, and have many wonderful memories of our families growing up. He really did have a special sense of humor, and always had a wry and effective comment. Once they treated us to a Royals game (many moons ago) and the seats were right behind our dugout. Someone had a really weird (for the time) haircut. Dennis said, "looks like a weed whacker accident."
