Having watched a documentary about Dennis (a.k.a. Georg) I was surprised to find this obituary mostly empty. From what I could tell he was a good man. Painting seemed to be the place where he was at most peace so I can think of no better epitaph than the one he wrote himself on Etsy, where he would sell his paintings. So I have included it here with
"I started out as Georg Gaertner in Schweidnitz in Silesia (now Poland). The rallying cry at my age of twelve in school was "Vincent Van Gough Color Paintings: Don't Be Afraid of Color!" When I was age 23, while serving with the Afrika Korps in Tunis, I was captured by Allied troops , brought to the US and became a German Prisoner of War in Camp Deming, New Mexico. As a POW, time left me much opportunity to practice drawing, for instance, a copy of a tourist angel head and the head of an Arab in a traditional robe. Later, traveling alone over many miles, I was never at home unless I had a painting on the wall. Multiple teachers formed my painting technique and made me try almost every type of medium: pencil, ink, oil and canvas, acrylic and canvas, knife and canvas, and even more exotic techniques such as Japanese Sumi-E painting. My life long search for light and color lead me to California, Hawaii, and Colorado which inspired these paintings." - Dennis Whiles
