DEREK REIST Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2021.
REIST--Derek, admired artist known for his dramatic cityscapes that captured New York's magic at dawn and dusk (see Harvard Magazine interview https://youtu.be/IFGOmYrG yNw [youtu.be]), died on January 30. His many patrons, Joseph Hertzberg foremost among them, and friends from St. Georges and Harvard will remember him as a consummate conversationalist, passionately dedicated to his art. He was a loving father to his son Tyson, supportive husband to his former wife Inge and devoted to his partner of more than twenty years Angela Glass.

We cherish our two paintings by Mr. Reist, one of a canal scene in Amsterdam that brought tears to the eyes of our Dutch next-door neighbors who often brought their friends over to admire it, and the other, much larger, that found a happy place on the wall facing our front door, of Broadway looking north on the Upper West Side. What joys these daily companions have brought to our family and friends! We first saw his work when we were at The Chapin School, which our daughters attended; his painting of the school building held pride of place in the reception room. It was a pleasure to meet him at gallery showings and watch him grow as an artist. I wish his loved ones well on this the third anniversary of his death.

Derek was one of the brightest and gracious friends that I was fortunate to know. God bless you Derek. Now you can paint the sky.

I am so saddened. Derek and I were classmates, off-campus roommates for many years, Fly Club brothers and we shared the same art mentor, Morton Sacks. He stuck to it and was more talented than I. We will miss him.
