VIRGINIA A. (DURKEE) RICHARDS
October 16, 1912 ~ July 01, 2011

Virginia Richards died Friday, July 1st at the age of 98. She was born and raised in Battle Ground, WA where her father, R. S. Durkee worked a modest farm and was involved in the public schools. When asked why he was 'wasting' money during the heart of the Great Depression by sending his two daughters, Virginia and Dorothy (Harris), to college, her father replied that he preferred that his grandchildren be raised by educated women.

Virginia graduated from Willamette University in 1933 with a degree in education. Her plans for a career as a teacher were waylaid when she fell under the spell of an aspiring journalist, Leverett Richards, who went on to enjoy a long, illustrious career in journalism at the Portland Oregonian. They married in 1934. Virginia then focused on their growing family. When World War II engulfed our country, Leverett volunteered to serve in the Army Air Corp as a (unpaid) civilian flight instructor. Virginia took over his old job as a reporter for a local newspaper in order to support their family of two small children until his commission came through.

After the war, they built a house in Vancouver, WA on Buena Vista Dr. overlooking the Columbia River. There, Leverett could keep an eye on activities at the Portland International Airport while writing in his study and Virginia had lots of space for the gardens that were her passion.

Once her children were in high school, Virginia finally began her long delayed career in public education. She was on the staff at Hudson Bay High School for 17 years both as a teacher and as a student counselor. Throughout her life in Vancouver, Virginia was active in community affairs. She was a member of The American Rhododendron Society, Columbia View Garden Club, League of Women Voters, and the American Association of University Women. She did volunteer work with the Red Cross, the American Association of Retarded Citizens, and the Grandview Group Home.

In 2009, Virginia left her home of 65 years and moved to Sequim, WA where she settled into a retirement community close to her son and daughter-in-law. This also made it possible to see and enjoy her twin great grand children.

Virginia is survived by her son, Durkee Richards and his wife, Mary Jeanne, of Sequim; her grandson Trevor Richards and his wife Anne Myers in St. Paul, MN; her grandson Bradley Richards, his wife Holly Boaz and their twins Charlie & Flora in Vashon, WA; and her two nieces Kathie (Harris) Goetsch and Barbara (Harris) Eisenberg and their families.

In keeping with Virginia's wishes, there will be no funeral service. However, she lives on in our hearts and in the gardens of those fortunate enough to have a Virginia Richards Rhododendron, named in her honor by Mr. Whitney.

Virginia was a lovely lady. I was very priviliged to spend time with her. I had some of her plants at my condo in Vancouver. I sold her home in Vancouver.

Virginia and Everett were members of The Friendship Force of Vancouver and Portland when my husband and I met them. A wonderful couple and both will always bring special memories. Everett because of his stories, sense of humor and his book, Elephants Don't Snore. Virginia because of fear sweet smile, positive attitude and her lavender sticks, love of flowers and plants of which she shared starts, the potlucks and travel experiences, but most of all the gift of their friendship.

I was just notified about Virginia Richard's death by a friend who is a landscape architect and was looking up the rhododendron, "Virginia Richards." Mrs. Richards was my advisor when I was the feature editor on the Hudson's Bay High School "Bay Window." That was probably 1959-61. It was a great experience and she was a great teacher. I have many happy memories from working on the Bay Window staff. My sympathy to her family.

My favorite teacher, always a kind and uplifting word, very inspirational. Those who had the pleasure of being in one of her CWP classes probably never forgot her, I know I didn't.
It is said that as we go through life there will be at least one teacher who will touch our heart and soul, she touched mine.
You had a long and beautiful life Mrs. Richards, Rest In Peace.

I am honored to have known and spent time with Virginia, a very special lady. I have a lovely hosta blooming in my front yard to remember her by! To Durkee and Mary Jean, I send my deepest sympathy. Mary Lou Mansfield

I first met Virginia in 1987 as a member of the Columbia Club ROAL. She was such a sweet, intelligent and friendly person who was loved and admired by all in the club. One of my favorite memories of Lev and Virginia occurred during a meeting in Sunriver, Or. After the banquet, a military band played for our dancing pleasure. This lasted until late in the evening. During the last half hour the only couple still up dancing was Lev and Virginia. They were such a cute couple that the rest of us just sat and watched. Virginia epitomized the word "lady" and will be fondly remembered by many.

We met Virginia and Leverett when we joined The Friendship Force of Columbia Cascade. Virginia shared her gardening expertise many times and also her little lavender sachets and sticks. She will be missed and fondly remembered.

Mrs. Richards was my CWP teacher at Hudson's Bay many years ago. I have always remembered her with great fondness. She touched so many young lives. My thoughts are with her family.

Lev and Virginia were wonderful dancers and lovely people. We enjoyed watching them every year at The Oregonian's 25-year club. Our 6' tall Virginia Richards rhododendron bloomed profusely this year, with flower trusses as large as soccer balls. My condolences to the Richards family.
