Dear Larry, Susan, Arlene and Mark,

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Diane's passing. You all have been such incredible friends and honorary family to us over the years, we couldn't have asked for better neighbors. She was truly a special force, had a very big heart and will be forever remembered and missed.

The memories and stories I have of Diane are endless. Here are a few of the ones that come to mind:

I'll always remember...
...How she taught me how to make ice cream from scratch using cream, sugar, vanilla, ziplocks and salt.
...Thanksgiving yams with marshmallow. I never knew marshmallows could be dinner food- this was a fun surprise.
...Foxwoods. She kept dishing out the $$$ so Mark and I could play this Lochness Monster egg-hunting Virtual Reality game for hours. On our way home she blasted Alicia Bridges "I Love the Nightlife"
... Endless gift baskets with a million curled ribbons. The Goodman basement was covered in them. You could always count on Diane to give the most thoughtful, generous gifts for every holiday, birthday, event.
...the personalized cloth diapers with different designs on the edges. Along with some very generous presents from her, I got a fresh batch of these when each child was born.
...How she sent me care package full of education books when I got my first job as a teacher. One of the books was Lee Canter's Assertive Discipline. I ended up working personally with him out in California and met with him weekly!

I think what stands out to me the most about Diane is her relentless openness, friendship and outreach to our family. We have what our family affectionately refers to as "the kinship." She cared about each and every one of us, always asked about us, even when several moves across towns, across states and across the country took us apart. Her home and heart were always wide open, so giving and so full of warmth.

I know we didn't get to see as much of Diane or the family as we would have liked, but I am very grateful and proud that she was such an instrumental part of our lives. She taught me so much about being a good neighbor, friend, educator and mom.

Our family will keep Diane's memory alive in so many ways. She'll live on in my heart as I strive to be a good friend and neighbor to the folks in our new little part of San Francisco. My heart goes out to each and every one of you.
