Diane Hastings Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2025.
Diane S. (McKenna) Hastings, affectionately known as Dee Dee, passed away peacefully in Lakeland, Fla. on September 10, 2025, at the age of 73, after a six-year battle with cancer.

Born on April 19, 1952, in Hartford, Connecticut, Diane was the beloved daughter of Arthur and Madeleine (Grenier) McKenna. She grew up in N. Franklin, graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 1970. Diane was blessed with two sons from her first marriage to Alexander P. Sadowski, Jr. In 1986, she married William "Bill" D. Hastings, with whom she built a life defined by love, laughter, and generosity.

Diane's life was marked by her warmth, humor, resilience, and unwavering devotion to others. She loved playing golf, tending to her flowers, traveling, and serving her community. While living in Baltic, Connecticut, she dedicated many years to public service, holding various elected positions and always putting the needs of others first.

Together with her husband Bill, Diane operated Fred's News in Baltic, where they created a welcoming hub for the community. Beyond the business, they organized weekly bus trips to local beaches and amusement parks, offering joy and connection to countless children and families. In 2007, Diane and Bill sold Fred's News and relocated to Lakeland, Florida. Shortly after, Diane began a new chapter at Walt Disney World, where her dedication and leadership shone over 13 years, culminating in her role as part of the leadership team at the acclaimed California Grill at Disney's Contemporary Resort. Following her retirement from Disney in 2020, she embraced a new role as Community Manager at Schalamar Creek Golf and Country Club, where she worked with passion and commitment until her passing.

Above all, Diane was devoted to her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband, William of Lakeland, Florida; her sons, Matthew P. Sadowski of Canaan, Connecticut, and Mark J. Sadowski of Orlando, Florida; her stepchildren, Todd R. Hastings of North Franklin, Connecticut, and Tina (Hastings) Gionet of Connecticut; and her sister, Patricia M. (McKenna) Herrick of Canterbury, Connecticut. She also leaves behind a large circle of friends and the many young people she mentored during her years at Disney. Diane was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Madeleine McKenna.

Diane's legacy is one of love, generosity, and vibrant spirit. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, sister, mentor, and friend whose zest for life inspired all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Schalamar Creek Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Diane's memory to the American Cancer Society.

Diane's passing is not meant to be mourned. We celebrate the amazing life she was able to live. We celebrate her as an amazing woman, mother and wife. As people we only have two things in common, we're born and at some point in time we pass. It's what we do in-between that sets us apart from one another. Now I only met her one time, but I could see that she chose to make the most of the time she had. To live every day with purpose . To be selfless and to keeping fighting the good fight. She maintained friendships and as any good mother the foundation for her family. She was a woman that is irreplaceable and will be deeply missed. I'm sure she wouldn't want us to be sad. She'd want us to make the most of the time that we have.

I will always remember Diane standing in the middle of Fred´s News shouting, "Hey, everybody, these are Becky´s parents!" the Sunday morning, early 2000s, when Don and I took a ride to Baltic to have breakfast and meet Diane and Bill. Since we all moved to Florida in 2007, we´ve spent most holidays together. Diane will always be in my heart.

When I started at California Grill in 2016 I was overwhelmed on my first day and told Diane that this wasn´t for me .....she turned to me and said "Go home" ..... "Sleep On it " and when you come back make this job about "YOU"
Well I did come back and now coming on 10 years at California Grill and 20 years with the Disney Company !
Thank you Diane for your guidance, words of wisdom , leadership and of course your friendship !
I´m so lucky to have known you !
You were the Best of the Best !
RIP Diane
