JOPLIN, Mo. — James L. Stone, age 75, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at his home following a two year illness. James was born Jan. 12, 1935, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., and had lived in the Joplin area since 1975, moving here from Nevada, Mo. He was employed with 12th Street Scrap and Atlas Iron and Metal Co., retiring in 1989. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. James married Peggy C. Meighen Sept. 29, 1956, in Nevada. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons, Sylvan "Van" Oyerly and wife, Diana, Stark City, Mo., and Richard "Rick Scrapyard Dog" Stone, Joplin; two daughters, Patricia (Patsy) Ogle and husband, Mike, Joplin, and Brenda Clark and significant other, Wade McDaniel, Neosho, Mo.; three sisters, Pearl Kimzey and Leona (Mickey) Vandenburg, both of Nevada, and Bessie Bradley, Littlerock, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James L. Stone II; a daughter-in-law, Ruby Stone; a son-in-law, James Clark; three granddaughters, Amethyst Stone, Shiela Stone and Camie Hailey; a great-granddaughter, Angel Ogle; four brothers; and two sisters. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Chapel with Evangelist Bessie Bradley and Rev. Greg Gooch officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Fairview Cemetery with his grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Jim will be missed by us all. He will always hold a special place in my heart. But there is comfort in knowing that dad was there to greet him at the gates. Peggy, and family you are in our thoughts and prayer. Love you.
