Dianne Birney (68) left us suddenly, unexpectedly and tragically on December 22, 2022.
Dianne was born on March 19, 1954 in Flint Michigan and spent her early childhood living with her mother, grandmother and grandfather.
It was in that home that she was affectionately known by her nickname “Cookie”. She is still known as Cookie to many relatives.
Her family settled in Mason, where she graduated from Mason High School in 1972. She then attended LCC where she completed her nursing degree in 1979. Dianne spent many years as a labor and delivery nurse at Lansing General. She then returned to school to further her education. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Michigan State University in 1994 and then her Master’s Degree in Nurse Midwifery from Case Western University in 1996. She completed her higher education degrees while working as a nurse and raising four school aged children.
She followed her heart, working primarily in women’s health for over
45 years as an OB nurse, Certified Nurse Midwife, and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She had worked throughout the field of midwifery in full-scope private practice, several clinics with hospital based birth, as a clinical nursing instructor, in well woman care and family planning and as a Triage Midwife. Most recently, Dianne had joined forces with her daughter, Caroline, specializing in breastfeeding support. In order to continue this work she helped found Next Generation Lactation Service. This non-profit is continuing to help new families in the Lansing area.
Dianne’s anthropological studies prepared her with a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives, people, and cultures leading to a lifelong passion for domestic, and world travel. Her travels took her to Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Ireland), Africa (Rwanda, Egypt), South Pacific (Tonga, Fiji), Jamaica, Belize, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Aruba and all over the United States.
She was a passionate hobbyist. Throughout her life she was a knitter, basket weaver, stained glass artist, quilter and master gardener. As a steward of the earth, she was currently turning her 15-acre property into a bee, butterfly and wildlife sanctuary. She was recently granted a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation for her property.
Dianne was an entrepreneur throughout her life. She was a founder of The Shire, The Peaks and Valleys Roofing Company, World’s Together Travel, Makemos Farms, Next Generation Lactation Service and Web Designs by D. In addition to her own businesses, Dianne played an integral role in many other businesses run by her close friends and family.
Dianne played an active role in her community through her volunteer work. She traveled with her daughter Alice to Louisiana and Florida to work in the disaster relief kitchen. While at the kitchen Dianne made a point at each meal to eat with a different individual to bear witness to their story in their time of need. She was a long time volunteer at Wheatland Music Organization where she saw a need for activities to occupy adolescents and co-founded the Middleground area which continues to grow and be a highlight of many festival goers.
Locally she volunteered at Lansing Baby Cafe where she provided lactation support, as well as being a tremendous baby holder and grandma to all that attended.
Dianne was a supportive wife, an adoring grandmother, an exquisite teacher, a protector of women, a great humanitarian, an astonishing baby-whisperer, an attentive listener, a best friend to many and the ultimate mother…a true masterpiece. She will be remembered as generous, strong-willed, humble, wise, honest, tender, tough, determined, organized, interested, forgiving, understanding and caring by her enormous web of community she created.
She was preceded in death by her parents Peg & Gene Goodman, in-laws Virginia & James Birney, sisters-in-law Janet & Toni Birney.
She will be deeply missed by her extensive loving family. Husband David, children Alice, Ben (Anne), Caroline (Tim) Passariello, Sarah (Bryan), beloved grandchildren Sophia, Ruby, Sebastian, Theodore, sister and best friend Lisa Goodman and her two daughters Emma and Tessa, brother Mark (Patty) Goodman. New found siblings Neile
(Patrick) Davis and Shea (Terri) Fitzgerald. Her Husband's siblings Jim Birney, Luanne (Doug) Dancer, Bill, Pat (Annette), Dick (Robin),
17 additional Nieces and Nephews and many, many other close friends and relatives.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Dianne’s name to:
The Dianne Kay Birney Scholarship Fund at Next Generation: 6920 S. Cedar St., Lansing, MI 48911, Planned Parenthood: Att. Online Services, PO Box 97166, Washington, DC 20090-7166 or The Bee & Butterfly habitat fund (www.beeandbutterflyfund.org)
A Celebration of Dianne's life will be held Sunday, January 15, 2023,
12:00 noon at Palmer, Bush and Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Holt Chapel. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. and will host a gathering after the service with appetizers and refreshments.

I would like to give my condolences to Dianne's family and friends. I grew up with her brother and sister Mark and Lisa on Eugenia Dr. She was always nice and helpful. I have a fond memory of her taking Mark and I to go see JAWS at the Meridean Mall. I just found out about her passing. God bless her and her family, and I know she is in heaven.

I have loved knowing Dianne, a true friend who had no requirements or expectations. She had a gift for seeing through all your flaws and foibles, and reflecting back to you your own unique qualities, with enjoyment of who you really are. Whenever our paths travelled together, from working in labor and delivery, to many “ Happy Wheatlands”, walking our dogs at the dog park, doing yoga classes, sharing family tree research at the genealogy seminar, or kitchen table chats sipping Lady Grey tea, it was all such a gift. Dianne just said “Yes” to life, never seemed to hesitate to embrace new things that seemed good to her and needed done. Her garden has been well tended with much love.

My heart is sad to hear of Dianne's passing. Many years ago, at Wheatland, I had a short conversation with her that helped me so much. Her words gave me peace that the choices I had made were the best ones for me, that I was not alone. Sadly, that was the last time I saw her. I had always planned on telling her how much that conversation meant to me and now that opportunity is gone. I am just one of many people whose life she touched with love. My heartfelt love to the entire family. You are in my thoughts and prayers. ❤

Dianne was a bright light to many. I didn’t know her as well as I would have liked, but she always greeted me like a kindred spirit whenever we met. There is no doubt, her life was devoted to making this world a better, kinder, more loved and loving place. ♥,Dianne

Dianne, for me, was the epitome of LOVE, LAUGHTER and LIGHT! I've been privileged to have had so many funny, wonderful and thought-provoking experiences with Dianne, that have flooded my head and heart since her passing. She was the kind of friend that needed no 'let's catch ups' and more of 'no time has passed'. I've wondered why I've not felt grief and I believe it's because Dianne's existence in my life and this loss, especially for her BELOVED family, has made my heart bigger that I was so fortunate to have known her.

Dianne was a very special person. She was my room mate in the early 70s. She gave me my first dog, whom she named Frido...the name stuck. I remember when she smiled she lit up the room. She was funny, laughed a lot and smart. She also introduced me to my current husband.
Although we lost touch of each other, she will always be in my heart.
Peace, love and prayers to her family.

I am so sorry to hear of Dianne´s passing. My heart goes out to you Dave, and your family. I feel lucky that my husband´s love of craft beer allowed our paths to cross and become friends. She was a terrific wife and mother, steadfast friend and renaissance woman. Grief can last a long time, but I hope your happy memories, and the hint of her smile in the face of your grandkids will bring you comfort and some joy.

I will miss my compatriot in naturalizing our properties. I know Diane had big plans for the land in back of their “yard”, and I hope there are folks that can, and will, see the project to its completion in her memory. I’m sure I will think of her often as we continue with our plans to naturalize our property.

What a tremendous loss. Dianne was 'the real deal', with a knack for truly being present with women during pregnancy and birth and parenting. She had a tremendous warmth, heard what people were and were not saying, and a wisdom that was amazing. I had the privilege of working with Dianne for a few years; she was a tremendous asset to our practice and our community. Kind, smart, caring, deeply dedicated, and lived her life according to her heart and soul. I will miss her. The people she touched in her many endeavors will be forever blessed and improved by knowing her. Go peacefully into the next realm, Dianne - you were such a gift to this one. Blessings and support to Dave and her family.

Dianne was such an important person in my life growing up as Sarah´s good friend and a Mason neighbor. She was a trusted mom-figure always available to answer our questions and laugh at our silly jokes. Dianne most recently supported me through the most challenging part of my breastfeeding journey with my son, and for that I am forever grateful. She has always volunteered her time to support others. She was truly one of a kind and I am grateful to have known her and learned from her. Sarah, and all of her family are in my thoughts during this difficult time.
