Dieter Klagge Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune on Oct. 9, 2020.
Dieter Klagge died on September 6th in Chicago at 85 years of age with family at his side after a brief period of illness. His life was a remarkable journey of triumph over adversity as well as an example of the power of human connections and relationships. Dieter was born in Stettin, Germany on May 4th, 1935 to parents Edith Klagge (née Lemke) and Leonhard Klagge, the second of 3 children. His early years were clouded by the turbulence of WWII, with his family becoming refugees in 1944 as their home city was leveled during the war. They clandestinely crossed the border from East to West Germany in 1947, ultimately settling in Kiel, Germany where he completed his primary education. Beyond the challenges posed by the war and post-war period, Dieter also carried the burden of a congenital heart condition that sapped him of energy throughout his childhood. Despite (or because of) this condition, he resolved to celebrate every moment of his life as a gift and a grand adventure, and in that he was successful until his final days.

In 1957 he was invited to study in America under the sponsorship of his sister, Ingeborg Klagge. He joined Inge and his aunt, Frieda Klagge in Chicago, which became his adopted home for the remainder of his life. Soon after his arrival, he underwent open heart surgery to repair his cardiac defect, one of the early patients of this pioneering procedure. After a successful recovery, he initiated collegiate studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology, starting work as a Technical Writer at Borg Warner in 1963. He transferred to Bell and Howell in 1966 where he worked as a technical coordinator and discovered the world of photography, which became a lifelong passion, starting with his documentation of 1960s Chicago and its iconic skyline. He ultimately joined Xerox as a salesman, a job in which he flourished from the early 1970s until his retirement.

It is safe to say that there may have been no better ambassador for the cities of Chicago and Evanston than Dieter. He was also a true citizen of the world, and he devoted his life to travel, amassing a vast library of slides that record trips to Uganda, Argentina, Russia, Tibet, North Korea, Iran, Kamchatka, Antarctica, and all points in between (114 countries in total), with numerous photographs sold to various media. He was also a patron of the arts, particularly opera, and regularly attended performances at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also enjoyed theater, and volunteered as an usher with the Saints into his 80's.

Dieter's most enduring and profound legacy will be in the connections he made during his life. He cherished people and their stories, and he nurtured relationships with family and friends around the world. As a member of The Friendship Force of Chicago, he hosted visitors from many countries and was a strong advocate for reaching across borders to celebrate our commonalities as well as our differences. Dieter was also one of the most ebullient hosts and attendees of a party (any party) that you could ever meet. He enjoyed philosophical discussions with people of every age and culture, but equally loved dancing until dawn, well into his 70's. He was a beloved and generous son, brother, uncle, and great uncle. He is survived by his sister, Ingeborg Larsen, his brother, Jürgen Klagge, nieces and nephews in the US and Germany, and numerous friends whom he treasured.

I know this is late, Dieter & friends, but our "one and a half" dates live forever in my mind. I thought Dieter was a German version of Jean Claude Killy when I was 23. We met at the WTTW auction and he stunned me by seeking me out rather than the Playboy Bunny next to whom I was standing. A few weeks later, he took me to a fabulous French restaurant on the Gold Coast of Chicago - a restaurant whose name I always wished I could remember. However, I cut the date short because I panicked with his statement, "I ski only in the Alps." and his question about what I thought about similarities between parties on the Gold Coast (Chicago's) and parties on the French Riviera! I figured he was either giving me a line or way too sophisticated for my young self. How I wished in the decades to follow that I had the nerve to contact him when, much to my surprise, I wound up in a Bridge Club in, of all places, South Dakota, with a Bona Fide Parisienne who had quit a job on the French Riviera to marry a professor stuck, like me, in SD. If there is a heaven, I wish you many a terrific dinner, slopes with the best of powder, and to some day tell you about my friend, Anne, from Paris. Margie Bullers Funchion

My wife Elizabeth and I have many memories of Dieter -- his sincere effort to befriend others he met in Xerox, his many foreign visitors to Chicago, his friends who shared his enjoyment of music, and of course his family members. We are so glad to have known him (since the early '70s). Among other things, he was an accomplished photographer. John Nesbitt -- J&S Photo Service

I am just aware of Dieters passing and words cannot express the sorrow that I feel at the loss of a such wonderful human being. I had the privilege of working as a trainee for Dieter at Xerox when he had the Sears account. He was a great friend and mentor and introduced a young guy to the best of Chicago and the world through his many slide shows. He will always have a special place in my heart. Rest in piece Dieter.

We met in your brother Dieter's house in Kiel for the first time a few years ago. Before that your niece Sabine (and my wife) often told me about her big hearted, travel loving, story telling and extraordinary uncle Dieter and that I had to meet you and that we would like each other. I was quite curious but when I actually met you it felt even more extraordinary. From the first moment we met you gently occupied a place in my heart and never left and it felt like family and friendship from the start. I loved your calm, friendly and positive nature and I enjoyed listening to every single one if your amazing stories you told me.

I wish we would have met more regularly but at least we talked quite often on the phone. And I wished that Matilda and you would have had the chance to get to know each other. You two certainly would have connected immediately. She is such a brave and positive girl that I think there is a part of you in her.

You will be missed a lot Dieter. You have had an impact on so many people that had the chance to be around you for a while in your eventful, vibrant life.

I think that was a life worth living and you certainly made the best out of it.

I am so thankful that I have got to know you.

"And by the way: You look beautiful today Dieter"

Take care Dieter.

Love,
Philipp Franik

When we're asked our relationship with Dieter, few of us would say one category is sufficient. Dieter to many of us was a friend, a co-worker, and practically family. He was for me since 1974 when I joined Dieter as a Xerox product specialist. He had the Sears Midwest account, and I was the rep helping with the latest Xerox that would replace the traditional offset press. But before long, whenever there were parties on Judson Street in Evanston, many Xerox attended. Then Dieter was teaching German, and I was there. My family was near Northwestern; we claimed Evanston as "home". And when he got involved with the Friendship Force, more visitors came to his receptions & dinners. Dieter attended my wedding, as he was part of our family. He even dated my cousin from Kiel (where his brother lives). We saw his neices / nephews grow up.

Over the years Dieter loved the opera, late evenings, and dinner parties. Groups over-lapped and many of his friends became our friends. Dieter was a connector in the most pure way. And seeing his cruise and travel slide presentations were lively & eye-opening. Later I supplied Dieter with photo reprints as we have a photo and print studio (J&S) in Chicago.

Like others who knew Dieter, it's with great sadness that Dieter's passing seemed so soon. His past couple of years were painful to see him suffering with his legs being so week. Yet he kept his spirits up -- for all of us.

Should any of Dieter's friends or family have a memorial or reception in his honor, please do invite us. Thank you -- John Nesbitt

During my studies at Northwestern University as a German exchange student from 1994-1995 I got known to Dieter and met him several times for nice dinner events at his apartment in Evanston. I was always impressed by his open minded personality, his dedication to classical music, literature. Last time I saw him was in summer of 2000 (picture).

Thank you Dieter for your friendship.
