Dietrich was a Master to many hundreds of dressage riders and other horse people. He was very influential in my riding experience. He was respectful of my horses, and encouraged me to stretch myself. He was often a guest in our home in Tualatin, Oregon where he was an engaging conversationalist, interested in many subjects. His wry smile, and cheery way will be sorely missed. His lessons will be re-experienced by video tape for years to come. I hope his family is comforted by the outpouring of love and respect that I have heard from all of the riders in San Diego and Portland. His generous imparting of knowledge was with a heartfelt love of great horsemanship. We will miss him terribly. Jeanne.

To Dietrich's loved ones:
This does not necessarily have to be displayed in the guestbook:
I just wanted you to know how deeply sorry I am for your loss and the world's loss. I just wanted to tell you how generous he was to me.
I never took a lesson from Dietrich, but I used to follow him around and take notes when he gave his lessons. When he realized what I was doing, he would expound on his teaching to help me understand what was going on and so that I could get better notes.
I am five feet two inches high and weigh 320 pounds and he helped me anyway. And his eyes were always kind when he looked my way.
I remember one day he had switched to a new barn, and I could no longer hear him teach. He had the mounting block next to his chair, and I went over and whispered to him in apology, while he was teaching a lesson, that I couldn't hear, and plopped down on the mounting block next to him.
I glanced up at him through my eyelashes to see if he was annoyed, but his lips showed the tiniest curve upwards at each end of his mouth, and I could tell that he was pleased. I believe that he really took an interest in people who were truly interested in dressage.
It really meant a lot to me to watch and listen to him teach. His mind worked the way mine does, and I could always understand his reasoning so well.
One day a trainer was having trouble getting a stallion that he was riding for a client, to do tempe changes. Dietrich asked if he wouldn't mind if he got on the horse. He got on the horse, and as if by magic, the horse immediately went into tempe changes. I never saw Dietrich give the horse an aid. (It turned out that the lesson had to be ended early, because the horse was lame, but for Dietrich, he stepped right out!) It was truly a joy to watch and I will never forget it. It was magic.
But I am sure you know all of this. I just had to let you know how generous he was to someone he didn't know, and had never even been introduced to....
My very best wishes to you and your family. You are all in my prayers.

Dietrich will be missed by so many. It was an honor just to watch him pass his knowledge on to both halves of the horse/rider partnership and to help them create some truely magical moments. My heartfelt sympathy to Kim and to his family.

We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to Dietrich's family at this great loss. Dietrich was our riding instructor for over 10 years and taught us dressage and how to jump. We have great admiration for Dietrich as he was a wonderful horseman and will be greatly missed by our family. Please accept our condolences.
