Don Eddy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 8, 2017.
December 16, 1935 - November 5, 2017
On November 5th, 2017, Don R. Eddy died peacefully with his family by his side. His life's goal was reached and he was seeing Jesus face to face. Born in Kenova, WV on December 16th, 1935, Don spent life serving others and leading them to know Jesus. His passion for basketball allowed him to influence thousands of young people. Being better ball players came second to leading better lives through knowing Christ. Don graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1958 with both a bachelor's and master's degree. He coached at the high school and college level, eventually starting the basketball program at UTSA. Along all of life's journeys, the love of his life, Elizabeth, was by his side, encouraging him in everything he did. Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth, son Chris, daughter Amy, daughter JulieAnne and wife Brenda, and 11 grandchildren. Don is also survived by his brother Hallett Eddy of Kenova, WV.

Never spoke to him, but grew up in Charleston, Il during the time he was coaching the men's basketball program at EIU. Attended many, many home games during the period 1975-80 - a time I felt was by far the most successful in the history of the basketball program at EIU. Would have been interesting to hear his thoughts on his vision of the basketball program upon his leaving for Texas because the program has never been the same since he and his coaching staff left. Probably another of many people more concerned with a person's relationship with Jesus Christ and character than his/her ability to participate in anything else. It's been said there's a place and time for everything - and probably for everyone who ever came into being. In my mind, coach Eddy's place and time was in Charleston, IL from 1968-80. Hope to meet him sometime up there.

When Don started the UTSA program, I had the opportunity to start a camp at Weatherford HS. He sent Terry Morris & Nevil Shed to run the camp. I have worked for Don for over 30 years in Texas camps. I have never worked for a man who portrayed Christian principles in his camps & his life. I have made many friends thru his camps , and I am sorry I never had the privilege to meet his family. I pray God's comfort & blessings on his family
He will be missed
God Bless

Coach Eddy brought class, leadership, and excitement to Eastern Illinois University and it's basketball program. Don was well respected on campus and in the Charleston Community. Thoughts and prayers to his wonderful family at this difficult time.

Don Eddy was instrumental in leading me to a saving knowledge in Jesus Christ. He organized a team meeting and invited Campus Crusade for Christ staff members to the meeting. Through that meeting and subsequent meetings with CCC staff I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior. He was a great basketball coach also. Thank you Don for your leadership in changing many young peoples lives, including mine, for the Lord. May his family be consoled in knowing he is with his Lord Jesus now.

Don was not only a fine basketball coach but a better person, I was fortunate to have worked with him At UTSA before I left for UH.

Coach Eddy changed countless lives including mine. From a camper in his camps to working along side him as a DEMO; he always was an honest and loving man. More than basketball he loved the Lord. Without a doubt when Coach Eddy met the Lord, he was welcomed with open arms and perhaps a basketball ☺Thank you Coach Eddy and the Eddy family for allowing such an inspirational man to influence the younger generation. He will never be forgotten. May peace and comfort be with you!

Elizabeth and family,
Was so very sad to hear about Don, but he was one of those Christians that one can say he ran the good race. Wish I could attend the service but am unable to, just know that my heart is saddened for the loss all of you are feeling. Praying God's strength, peace and unimaginable love that only He can supply.
