Dear Jean and Mitzi .
Don was a brother, friend, comrad, supporter, advisor and all around
fantastic guy. As a troop commander he was unsurpassed in his ability to inspire and lead men. His love for his fellow man was surpassed only by his love for you two and his entire family. We will always have really great memories of his love, guidance, careing and unlimited and undying love for you and his country..

Delta Tau Delta Brother Don and Jean have meant so much to us through the years. Fifty-six years after introducing us to one another at UTK, they remain our cherished friends. Jean and family, we are with you in thought and prayer at this time of remembrance.

Dear Hummel Family,
The Newman family would like to extend our deepest sympathy to you in your time of grief. You will all be in our prayers. I have no doubt that LTC Hummel was welcomed into the pearly gates by my Dad and all of his military comrads. Just imagine the welcome party they are throwing. You can forever be proud of all that LTC Hummel did for the citizens of Tennessee and for his country, his family and his friends. We were priveldged to know him. May God give you comfort in the coming days and weeks.
Respectfully,
Ann Rita Newman Ditmore

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I really wish I could come out. I've always enjoyed the brief visits with Uncle Don and hearing about his life in Tennessee.

LTC Don Hummel: My Company Commander in the 1st Brigade of the 30th Armored Division way back in the early 1960's. A mentor with a keen understanding of how to encourage and develop young officers into more effective military leaders. Although it has been a long time, my experience with then "Captain Hummel" will forevermore be cherished as an important part of my military career.
With prayers for the family remaining.

LTC Hunnel was a wonderful man. He made such a difference in not only my life, but also my son's. I was a out of work single Mother when he took a chance and hired me fulltime with the TN National Guard. That was 1976 - here it is 2010 and I am still here and was able to provide a good life for my son. I am very sorry for your loss, but so happy you were blessed to have him all these years.
