Philippa Sherman Meehan, 86, of Albany, beloved mother, companion and thoughtful community member, passed away on March 26, 2017. Philippa departed peacefully of natural causes at the Edward C. Allworth Veterans' Home in Lebanon.
Philippa is survived by her daughters, Gloria Meehan of Canyon Lake, Texas, Diane Meehan of Beaverton and Karen Esquivel of Aurora; son Christopher Meehan of Corvallis; and three nieces, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Born Philippa Sherman Seabrook II in Portland to parents Philippa Norton (Sherman) Seabrook and the Honorable Judge John Bellinger Seabrook, Philippa was the middle child of three girls. Philippa spent most of her childhood growing up along the Oregon Coast in Seaside, Cannon Beach and Gerhardt. After high school graduation, Philippa joined the Army, trained as a nurse, and was a Korean War-era veteran. She soon married a career serviceman and traveled throughout the United States and Europe over the next 20 years.
Philippa loved to travel and explore new cultures. She enjoyed the sense of adventure and discovery, and would be a lifelong learner, which also included attending such educational institutions as Creighton University (Omaha, Nebraska), Oregon State University, University of Oregon and Linn-Benton Community College where she studied microbiology.
Philippa had a wide variety of artistic interests: she played piano, trained as an opera singer, wrote poetry, was a docent for nearly 14 years for Albany's Historic Carousel Museum, and most recently taught piano to adult learners. She enjoyed gardening, and the outdoors, especially the Oregon Coast. Philippa was also a volunteer for the Albany Volunteer Caregivers, assisting in transporting elderly individuals to their doctors' appointments, grocery shopping and on excursions to the Oregon Coast.
Philippa, together with her partner and companion, Chuck Barrett, owned and operated Hoagie Haven in Albany for 25 years, until they closed the restaurant doors in 2002 to travel the Oregon coast, explore nature preserves, antique shops and bookstores.
Philippa was preceded in death by her companion and partner of 33 years, Charles "Chuck" W. Barrett; sister Alice Taggert Seabrook in 2016; son John P. Meehan in 2015; and sister Maryland Seabrook Johnson in 2014.
A funeral service for Philippa Sherman Meehan will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home.
