Don Margo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 19, 2008.

GREENSBORO — Mr. Don Gerry Margo, 60, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2008, with his wife, Joyce, by his side. He fought a long, courageous battle with lung cancer, never giving up hope of being one of the few survivors of this horrible disease.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at George Brothers Funeral Service in Greensboro with Reverend Charles Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Don was born on April 8, 1948, and lived his entire life in Greensboro. He loved his hometown and always took great pride in taking visitors for a tour of what he thought was the jewel of the South.

He began his long, successful career with AMP/Tyco Electronics in September of 1969 and took great pride in working his way up the ladder. He was the one everyone went to with any question or problem because they knew Don would have just the right solution. At one point, his coworkers nicknamed him "Rambo" because he was the one to lead the way and immediately get things done. Don was instrumental in the design and development of several AC-power related products, most notably AMPINNERGY, AMP Undercarpet Cabling and the NM/Romex Connector System. He was passionate about these projects and worked to develop a global market for them with such companies as Best Buy, Knoll Furniture, Tandy/Radio Shack, Circuit City and many others. He loved a challenge and never backed down from any problem or obstacle. He was a mentor to many of his coworkers and some even touted they attended M.I.T. (Margo Institute of Technology).

Don was the most loyal friend anyone could ask for. He was compassionate, caring, fun-loving, daring, and always eager and honored to lend a helping hand. Don was abundant in his giving and truly lived the spirit "it is better to give than to receive." He exuded class and was a great inspiration to so many people. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone.

Don was the most devoted husband to Joyce for 30 beautiful years. They loved traveling the world and always took advantage of every opportunity that came their way. Cruising was one of their favorite vacations, but some other memorable vacations were to Australia, where he held a baby koala on their Outback Safari; Germany, where he nervously drove the Autobahn; France, where he and Joyce enjoyed the snowy view from the top of the Eiffel Tower; Hawaii, where they swam at Waikiki Beach; and England, where they became very close friends with Charles Dickens' great-grandson, Cedric Charles Dickens, and his wife, Elizabeth. In Rome they attended the weekly blessing from Pope John Paul II. He enjoyed NASCAR and drove a stock car at Lowes Motor Speedway twice with the Richard Petty Driving Experience (under a full moon no less). There were so many more trips most people could only dream of.

He will be sorely missed by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Kristen and Steve Daukas, and the three joys of his life, granddaughters Mackenzie, Sydney and Cassie. They loved their "Poppy" and thought he was the coolest guy ever, who always stopped whatever he was doing just to spend time with them. He also leaves behind his beloved Shih Tzu, "Abigail". Don is also survived by his brother-in-law, Chuck McKibben, of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Lawrence, his brother, Fred Lawrence and his sister, Jean McKibben.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at George Brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, 3600 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410, or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Doctors Heller, Burney, Mohammed, Adrena Johnson and all the staff at the Regional Cancer Center and Hospice of Greensboro.

Online condolences can be sent to George Brothers Funeral Service in Greensboro, NC.

My dearest Don,

You have been gone from me for over 13 months and I still miss you as much as ever. I think of you everyday and wish you were still here sharing in my happiness and that of our granddaughters. They often speak of you with warm thoughts and memories.

You have your beloved Abigail with you which should warm your heart and soul. You both were the loves of my life and someday I will reunite with you. Until that time, remember I love you and miss you very much.

My husband, Bob, and I first met
Joyce and Don when Joyce and I
won a trip to Germany about 20 years ago. We have loved them since we first met and have stayed
in contact with them. My husband
passed away 8 years ago, and they
supported me then. It was so sad
to learn about Don's death. I share
her grief and will continue to love and support her.

Dear Joyce & Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I was priviledged to have known Don for the past 9 years, and fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him on our many projects. Don was passionate about Tyco and the products he represented. He always wore a smile, had a positive outlook, and was truely genuine. It is seldom, that you meet a person like Don. He was a good friend and will be deeply missed by me, and the team at Best Buy. Please know that you and your family, are in our thoughts and prayers.

Joyce, I will never forget meeting Don when I stayed at your home. He was so hospitable and friendly; a truly nice man. I know that you and Don had a happy life together. May the many memories you created over the years sustain you in the future years.

There's so much to say about Don and his legacy to me. So many times his ways made a mark on mine. I guess I'll share a few... Don told me that my husband was to be a pole bearer for Sarah. My response in an agony of thought was, he only has a navy pin striped suit. Don said not to worry, it will be fine. On the Day of the funeral, all of the pole bearers were wearing navy pin striped suits. This was how Don could touch your heart without saying a word.
On one of his many trips to Orlando he made it a point to come see the land that I had bought to build on. Together we walked all over this 2 acre property and Don's enthusiasm over my little bit of dirt was as great as mine. He made me feel so good about my purchase.
I'll never forget all of the memories, and every time the number 13 comes up, I know that it's LUCKY.
I love you all... I miss you Don.

Dear Joyce and Family,

Having had the pleasure of working with Don for more than 15 years, and while keeping in touch during the past 7 years, we developed a genuine friendship that will remain forever.

Throughout those years Don and I shared many great times together. He was a great teacher, knowledgeable, professional, courteous, friendly, and without a doubt –had the most positive-thinking attitude of anyone I’ve ever met. Even during his most difficult times, while talking with him on the phone one would never know by the sound of his voice that he was in pain. Despite all his suffering, he recently said in reflection to me “how very blessed he was”.

Don touched several lives and was a true inspiration. Collen and I are just two of many who are both fortunate and blessed to have known him. Please take comfort in knowing that he and you will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Joyce,
During this time of great loss and grief our thoughts and prayers are with you. Only by God's grace and mercy can we continue after such a loss but the wonderful thing is His mercy is everlasting. We don't have it for a day or week but for the rest of our lives He will be there to comfort us. I know the loss William and I feel and I can only imagine what you must feel. While our loss is great we feel so blessed to have known Don and called him "friend". While we know he is in a much better place our hearts sure feel empty without him. We send our love to you and the family and we thank you for being our "special friends".
Love,

Joyce,
What can be said when you lose one of your best friends?
We've known Don for nearly 20 years in good times and bad. I'll always cherish our times at Tyco/AMP and working together on the modular furniture and power business. Don's knowledge and expertise were key in helping develop the CPD Power Team Business Plan over 10 yrs ago and I'm proud to say I was a graduate of the MIT! I have a lot of fond memories with Don at Knoll, Neocon, Byrne, Interface Flooring, and many electrical trade shows. Thru his knowledge, we won many new power customers for Tyco/AMP, both domestically and internationally thru PTD, and his eyes glistened since he loved winning-over new customers! Don's advice was also key in helping me decide to leave Tyco and pursue a financial services career.
Don was both a mentor and friend; but more importantly, he was a very good man that will truly be missed by many. A very good legacy to leave!

Don was the absolute best manager I ever have worked for - or as Don would say "worked with". He was a blessing for me personally and my family. He will always be a strong inspiration, especially when things are not going our way. I miss Don dearly. Don - if you are listening - Thanks again and God Bless !

Joyce, and family, my heart breaks at your loss.I have known Don for so many years.we lived side by side in a apartment on waugh street.I was single,he was married.we all had a ball.he was like a brother, good friend rolled all into one.years passed and we would run into one another, and laugh at life on waugh street.the last time I saw him was at the Page high school reunion .He was such a dear, and as much in love with Joyce as if it were the first day.we promised to stay in touch, and with most things we did not.Joyce and I started to email, then came the awful news of his illness.and now the worse news of his passing.I had just sent Joyce a email to ask how he was, only to get the reply he was gone.If ever there was one true gentleman,Don was it.He was kind and always, always smiled.I will remember that above all.if there is a day that the sun is expecially bright,I will simply assume its just Don smiling .we will miss him forever..we love you Don..always.

Dear Joyce, I can't begin to express my feelings for Don. I have never known anyone like him. When I met the 2 of you showing property..I had my Mother with me. He seemed to have such an appreciation for my efforts to take care of her.He made a promise that if he ever bought another house he would buy from me. I never doubted that.He was the most sincere man I have ever known. I am so sorry for all of us who knew him.Heaven has gained another Saint.

My prayers and thoughts are with Don’s family and friends. What a wonderful man, as I read his inspirational write up, it was apparent that so many looked to Don for inspiration, guidance and friendship. Don offered his friendship to everyone he met, always looked for the best in people and he always found it. He always had time to give, where he got it considering all that he was able to get done is a tribute to genius, and only matched by his generosity. Don will always be in my heart as I continue ask myself, “What would Don do here?” What a wonderful man to have in my life.

Joyce and Kristen,

Hard to sum up in a few words what Don meant to me, and I think to everyone he touched. He embraced me when I hired into AMP in 1993, and we had such great times for 12 years at the NeoCon show in Chicago. More importantly, he was there for me when Tyco let me go in 2001, and we stayed close friends. I will try to emulate his positive attitude and reaching out to others as a tribute to him. I'll do the best I can.

May 25, 2008

Dear Joyce and family, I was saddened to hear of Dons passing. I remember so well when Don and I were two teenagers working at Taylors Esso pumping gas back in the 60's. Years later when Don had done so well at AMP he made it possible for my then struggling company to get a contract with his company. At that time I had a house full of children, very little busuness and was on the verge of losing everthing. Dons' willingness to help out a friend in need will never be forgotten. I pray that Heavenly Father will bless you in this time of loss with the peace and comfort you need so very much. Richard Whiteside

Thank you so much in helping Don cross peacefully over and for all these years showing him the love of Christ. Allow yourself time to grief, to remember and to reflect but most importantly focus on God who will help you through.
