Donald Louis BARR

Donald Louis Barr, 98, left this world on June 11, 2018. Born on November 13, 1919 in Chicago, he moved with his family several times until settling in San Francisco in 1932. It was there he met the love of his life, Joyce Nicholas, at a church dance. They married in 1943 and the two enjoyed dancing together ever since. Don and Joyce celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in February of this year.
Moving to San Carlos in 1947, he worked for Lenkurt Electric Company for 36 years, progressing up the supervisory ladder to Factory Manager. He retired in 1983 and soon after, moved to Diamond Springs, where they lived until moving back to San Carlos in 2010. In May of 2017, he and Joyce moved to Nazareth Vista in Belmont, where he lived until his death.
While living in San Carlos, Don and Joyce raised their 3 children. He was active in City Council, Planning Commission, Boy Scouts of America and Lions Club. Some of his children's fondest memories are of the Lions' Club Haunted Houses he created in San Carlos.
They spent their retirement years checking off items on their "bucket list". Their travels included 2 African safaris, helicopter hiking the Canadian Rockies, New Zealand, the Galapagos Islands, rafting the Grand Canyon, Rogue, Owyhee rivers, and many, many more adventures.
He loved the outdoors and nature; he was never happier then the times he spent deep in the Sierras with a pack on his back, awed at the splendor of his surroundings. He had an endless curiosity about the scientific world – loved chemistry, astronomy, geology and continued to read scientific journals up until his death. Any given night would find him tinkering in his garage on a current project. He loved gardening, photography and spent countless hours researching family history. So many of his interests are shared by his family. He had an incredible mind – sharp and inquisitive until the very end.
He will be sorely missed by all of those fortunate to have been a part of his life.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 75 years, Joyce Barr and children Deborah Margiotta (Russell), Nicholas Barr and Cynthia Bennett Peavey (Arthur), 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
His ashes will be scattered at a private family ceremony in the mountains he loved.
