Donald “Donnie” Francis Carney 60, passed away on April 27, 2020 following a long illness in Tufts Medical Center, Boston. He was the husband of Deborah (Tresch) Carney.
Don was born in Springfield, a son of George and Marilyn (Farrell) Carney of Westfield. He was a resident of Southwick for the last 25 years. Prior to his retirement Don was employed as a Forman for Parts Tool and Die, Agawam.
Don so enjoyed his life, living each day to the fullest. He loved vacationing in Ogunquit, Maine during the summer and visiting Colorado whenever possible. Don was an avid sports fan. The Bruins and the Pats were his teams. He spent many days in Boston watching Bruins games, sometimes difficult to watch. But, he always looked forward to the next game. Don also enjoyed working on his 1955 and 1966 classic cars. He went to many car shows over the years, winning awards for his cherished vehicles. Don played hockey for Trade High School during the 1970’s. As a goalie he received a “letter” each year. As time went on, Don played with the “over 40 team” with friends in town.
In addition to his wife and his parents, Don is survived by a son, Daniel Carney of Boston; two daughters, Alaina Fennington and her husband Stephen “Cuyle” Fennington, of Denver, Colorado and Kelly Pires of Fall River; two brothers, Paul Carney of Springfield, and Brian Carney of Westfield; three sisters, Lynn Lapponese and her husband Pat, of Belchertown, Beth Reneris of Granville, Dawn Spear and her husband Mike, of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Raegan, Calla, Jacob, Richard , Ayden, Caleb, and Brendan. Don also leaves nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
To accommodate the Governor’s limitations, a Life Celebration Service will be held on a later date at the Southwick Forastiere Family Funeral Home, 624 College Highway, Southwick. You may call the funeral home in the future (413) 569-5306 for further information. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Don’s name may be made to Sister Caritas Cancer Center, 271 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or to Tufts Medical Center Development 800 Washington St., Suite 23, Boston, MA 02111 or online at giving.tuftsmedicalcenter.org/give. I worked for Donnie at Parts, Tool, and Die for about 10 years in the burr room. I met Dan only once on a trip to Lebanon Valley Dragway back in Donnies racing days in his Camaro. I went to Lebanon many times with Donnie.

Rest In Peace my friend.
My condolences to his wife and children.

Deepest sympathies to Dan and Deb, and the rest of the Carney family. Don was a truly nice guy, who very clearly loved his family very much. He will be greatly missed, but you will always have those fond memories of a super father and dad.
