Dear Bernie and family
I am just learning about Don's recent death and want to offer my sincerest condolences. I met Don many years ago when he came to Rockhurst High a year behind me; among many accomplishments, I remember him often on the pitcher's mound for the Hawklets. I join my prayers to yours and to those of all his family/friends as we send a great man back to the Lord. May the same Lord comfort each of you in your time of great loss.

I got to know Don through the Latin Mass Community of the Diocese of Kansas City/St. Joseph. He was such a wonderful person and friendly to everyone. He has a carpentry talent - second to none. We are in our beautiful restored church because of much of the work and direction that Don provided in his group of dedicated helpers. May I say that St. Joseph (the worker) now has Don to help him out. As I wrote that I got a big smile on my face. I will really miss Mr. Deister. My prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends. Thank you Don, for everything you did for Old St. Patrick Oratory. RIP

I am very sorry to hear the news.. my heart and prayers are with you during your times of sorrow. Don was very well known and liked by everyone he came upon. He always had a smile on his face.. I have missed not seeing him in Parkville, walking through the alley with one of the boys.. Heaven is a very lucky place to have him in their presence... I love you all.
Sincerely,
Teri Deister

At the reception after Old St. Patrick’s was consecrated, Monsignor Schmitz gave Don the highest compliment that he could give: that he deserved his own niche at Old St. Patrick’s. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Bernie and family,
Please know that I am thinking of each and everyone of you. My heart is heavy and saddened to hear of Don's passing. Our lives are truly better having him been a part of it. He was a 'great' man. I know that if your tears could build stairways and your memories could find pathways you would climb up to Heaven and bring Don back, but you must be happy as God needed him and he is in a better place. All of us will be with him some day. I wish for all of you to have the strength to deal with the loss of your loved one and I pray that the pain of your loss will lessen as each day passes. Please find my love for your family encircled around you, find peace within your hearts and my hope for eternal life.
God didn't promise days without pain,
Laughter without sorrow or sun without rain,
But God did promise strength for the day-
Comfort for the tears & light for the way.
All who believe in his Kingdom above.
He answers their faith with everlasting love.
I send my prayers and blessings to your entire family and will continue to pray for your peace & comfort.
We do know that Don is in Heaven and will watch over everyone he loved.

Dear Bernie and Family: We were shocked and saddened to see where Don had passed! We always enjoyed Don and will miss running in to him from time to time. He will be missed! Our best to you, the kids and the rest of the family. He is gone but will never be forgotten. I'll always remember all those years ago when we were neighbors and the kids would run back and forth between our houses! It seems like it was just yesterday. Time is passing too quickly! Love, "The Nelson Clan"- Jerry, Bev, Wayne, David,Tammy, Meghan, Nikki and Hannah.
