Donald Ray James

Donald Ray James, 74, passed away on March 24, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on July 18, 1950, in the same city he called home throughout his life, Donald left behind a legacy of dedication, humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends.

A proud graduate of Sam Houston State University, Donald earned his bachelor's degree in Educational Studies. Though his academic path pointed toward education, it was at Welder's Supply Company where he found his professional calling. Beginning his career there in 1973, Donald remained a loyal and hardworking employee until his retirement. His decades-long commitment to the company reflected the same steadfastness he brought to every aspect of his life.

Donald was known by many titles-Coach, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother-but perhaps none captured him more fully than "Friend." In his younger years, he was an avid athlete who not only played but also coached sports with passion and enthusiasm. His love for competition never waned; later in life he became a devoted participant in fantasy sports leagues and a fervent sports fanatic. Whether cheering from the sidelines or analyzing stats with friends over drinks or calls, Donald's joy for the game was infectious.

Family was at the heart of everything Donald did. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Tammy Smith and her husband Max; Karen James; and Crystal Geer. His grandchildren-Brittany Hunkin and her husband Matt; Lauren Little and her husband Austin; Paisley James-Rodriguez; and Levi James-Rodriguez-brought him immense pride and joy. He also cherished his great-granddaughter Jolee Hunkin. Donald is also survived by his sister Susan Priest and her husband Buddy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Patricia James.

Donald's sense of humor lit up every room he entered. He had a unique way of making people laugh while also making them feel seen and valued. Those who knew him best describe him as one of a kind-sacrificing when it mattered most, always ready with a joke or story that would leave everyone smiling.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 27, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at The Bend located at 7730 Bandera Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78240. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose presence made life brighter for so many.

Donald's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all of his friends for their support during this difficult time.
