Donald Loeb Obituary

Mesa - August 23, 1941 - November 18, 2022

Donald Osgood Loeb, respected Arizona attorney, mentor, brother, husband, devoted father, and friend, died on November 18, 2022, at 81.

A 1963 Yale graduate and a 1966 alumnus of the University of Arizona College of Law, Don practiced for more than five decades with firms including Sparks & Siler and Campana, Vieh & Loeb. He served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Arizona and as Assistant City Attorney for the City of Scottsdale. He led his peers as President of the Scottsdale Bar Association (1988-89) and he was widely admired for his integrity, rigorous research, and unwavering commitment to clients. Donald O. Loeb's life in the law exemplified a commitment to justice and public service, making him a significant figure in the Arizona legal community.

During the foreclosure crisis, Don advocated for homeowners and co-authored an amicus brief to the Arizona Supreme Court in support of consumer rights-work that reflected his belief that the law should protect everyday people. As a Yale alumni interviewer in Arizona, he guided generations of students with thoughtful questions, practical advice, and encouragement.

Don loved people and ideas. He often read several books at a time, could converse with anyone, and delighted in planning memorable family travel. He enjoyed tennis and golf, and he was known and beloved for his dry, often sarcastic wit. He was the proud father of two daughters. His eldest, Heather, who had Down syndrome and whom he loved deeply, predeceased him in 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Kristin; his twin sister, Susan; his brother, Robert; his brother-in-law, Terry; and his former wife, Gwen-all of whom remained devoted friends and steadfast supporters of his well-being. Their presence brought comfort and companionship in his final years.

He is deeply missed by his extended family and the many friends, clients, and colleagues whose lives he enriched with his knowledge, humor, and heart.
