Donald Ray Marshall

In 1958 I was a freshman at BYU. At that time, there were many "social units" on campus. Don was a member of Tau Sigma. Many of the members were varsity football or basketball players. I joined Tau Sigma and gra!!vitated toward Don because I have a musical background. That year, Don and I were able to work together on creating a Student Assembly program that ended up being selected as the Best of the Year. In the spring of each year, there was a group musical program called SongFest. Don wrote a song, The Swiss Clockmaker's Song won the competition. He taught and directed 50 non-musical athletes how to sing! I also was fortunate to sing with him in the TauSig quartet. It was a joy to know Don and to experience his creative skills. I have fond memories of the BYU 58th Singles Ward Branch back in 1977-78. I remember Bishop Marshall as a kind, patient, intelligent, good humored man. It was definitely a growing time, and I was fortunate to know Don Marshall.

This year I joined the faculty of BYU and asked myself what kind of impact I might have on these amazing young students. I reflected upon my time at the Y and could only remember one Professor in the humanities that inspired me. It wasn´t until today, as I read an article in the Y magazine, that connected the dots. Professor Marshall!! Surely it couldn´t be the same ?!? But one google search and a glimpse of his bearded smiling face brought back a flood of memories. As a Business School student I was introduced to experiences that I could never have imagined. Art, theater, music, history, passion. He inspired me and continues to inspire me. Sincerest gratitude and appreciation for someone that changed the world. One student at a time.

Donald Marshall truly holds a special place in my heart. I have never even taken a class from Brother Marshall. I met him by chance and purchased one of his books. He is a most Christ like human being. I was needing a friend while attending BYU and I instantly felt his love and interest in me as a person. And yes he knew my name, but it was a lot more than that. I will always cherish the name Donald R. Marshall.

I took American Humanities from Don my sophomore year at BYU. He did, indeed, learn everyone in that large classroom´s name-perhaps 150 students-including mine. We were happy to have had him spend the night at our home for several years during the Sundance film festival. He would most often slip out at 7:00 am and then back in after midnight having seen 6-8 films during the day. He became "Uncle Don" to our kids. We looked forward to his visits every year. He was truly a remarkable, multifaceted, brilliant man.

Bishop Don Marshall was the Bishop of the 58th Young Single Adult Ward where Rhonda and I met. He rightfully took credit (along with his wonderful wife Jean) with that twinkle in his eye for our marriage and was an incredible influence on me on how to live a creative and fantastic life. My bookshelves are lined with his books. He taught me to appreciate story telling in writing and film. We will miss him.

I was privileged to take his International Cinema class at BYU, which was quite possibly my favorite class of all time. He was a brilliant man, and hilarious. My sister and I ran into him at the opera a couple of years ago (over 20 years since either of us had seen him) and he remembered both of us! He was a true shining light!

Truly, Don really WAS The Most Interesting Man in the World. He was a fascinating, talented person in so many ways. I often think of the last time I visited with him and his amazing wife Jean. It was exceptionally hard to tear myself away from them and their wonderful home. Heaven certainly has a special person back.

So sad to see you go, Don. I cherish the years of collaboration with you developing the Humanities 101 tutorials and those tricky International Cinema edits. Condolences to you Jean and all the family. A great, gentle and inspiring man has left us. A haere.
