Donald Marshall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 27 to Oct. 28, 2022.
Donald Ray Marshall, 87, passed away October 25, 2022 in Provo, Utah. An emeritus professor of humanities at Brigham Young University, Don is remembered for his passion for all the arts, for teaching, for his dedication to the International Cinema program, and for learning the names of every one of his students.

Don was born November 25, 1934 in Panguitch, Utah, the youngest of Earl and Eva Daly Marshall's seven children. In 1953 he came to BYU as a student, where he majored in Art, joined the Tau Sigma social unit, made lifelong friends, and composed award winning songs for the annual Songfest competitions. From 1955-58 he served a mission to Tahiti for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, developing a love for the people, the language, the music and the beautiful islands. While serving as a U.S. Army Reservist during the Berlin Crisis, Don was activated in 1961with the 144 Evac Medical unit and sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Though the crisis ended before he was deployed, he enjoyed his time co-directing a men's chorus called The Mormon Corpsman. Returning to BYU to earn his M.A. in English, he met Jean Stockseth, and they were married in 1964. After teaching at the University of Hawaii for two years, Don received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in American Literature and returned to BYU in 1971 to teach in the humanities department. In the late seventies, he served as bishop of the BYU 58th Ward of single young adults.

A life-long creative, Don loved writing, painting, photography, composing music, directing plays, and watching as many films as he could. He began his writing career early, winning, at fourteen, the The Deseret News silver medal for "excellence in writing and art" for the mystery serials he published in the Newsette, a Sunday insert for young writers. He went on to author two short story collections: The Rummage Sale (1972) and Frost in the Orchard (1977), as well as the novel Zinnie Stokes, Zinnie Stokes (1984) and a children's book, Enchantress of Crumbledown (1990). At the request of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he wrote the script, lyrics and music for a musical based on stories from The Rummage Sale that was performed in Salt Lake City, the SCERA Shell, and BYU Education Week.

A true film buff, Don led BYU's International Cinema from 1975 until he retired in 2000, building it into one the largest and longest-running foreign film programs in the country. An avid adventurer, he loved traveling to film festivals and art houses, spotting new films he could bring to campus, as well as leading study abroad programs to Madrid, Paris and London. He instilled a love of the arts in his students, friends and family - expanding their awareness and appreciation.

He is survived by his wife Jean Stockseth Marshall and his three children, Robin Marshall (Russ Moorehead), Brooklyn, New York, Jordan Andersen (Matt), Sandy, Utah, and Reagan Marshall, Los Angeles, California, as well as five grandchildren, Max Pinegar, Lucy Pinegar, Cleo Pinegar, Marshall Moorehead, and Holmes Andersen. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Marshall Black Willes, Orem, Utah. A memorial service will take place at a future date.

In 1958 I was a freshman at BYU. At that time, there were many "social units" on campus. Don was a member of Tau Sigma. Many of the members were varsity football or basketball players. I joined Tau Sigma and gra!!vitated toward Don because I have a musical background. That year, Don and I were able to work together on creating a Student Assembly program that ended up being selected as the Best of the Year. In the spring of each year, there was a group musical program called SongFest. Don wrote a song, The Swiss Clockmaker's Song won the competition. He taught and directed 50 non-musical athletes how to sing! I also was fortunate to sing with him in the TauSig quartet. It was a joy to know Don and to experience his creative skills. He was a good friend and a treasured TauSig brother. Bill Baker, Cumming, GA

I have fond memories of the BYU 58th Singles Ward Branch back in 1977-78. I remember Bishop Marshall as a kind, patient, intelligent, good humored man. It was definitely a growing time, and I was fortunate to know Don Marshall.

This year I joined the faculty of BYU and asked myself what kind of impact I might have on these amazing young students. I reflected upon my time at the Y and could only remember one Professor in the humanities that inspired me. It wasn´t until today, as I read an article in the Y magazine, that connected the dots. Professor Marshall!! Surely it couldn´t be the same ?!? But one google search and a glimpse of his bearded smiling face brought back a flood of memories. As a Business School student I was introduced to experiences that I could never have imagined. Art, theater, music, history, passion. He inspired me and continues to inspire me. Sincerest gratitude and appreciation for someone that changed the world. One student at a time.

Donald Marshall truly holds a special place in my heart. I have never even taken a class from Brother Marshall. I met him by chance and purchased one of his books. He is a most Christ like human being. I was needing a friend while attending BYU and I instantly felt his love and interest in me as a person. And yes he knew my name, but it was a lot more than that. I will always cherish the name Donald R. Marshall.

I took American Humanities from Don my sophomore year at BYU. He did, indeed, learn everyone in that large classroom´s name-perhaps 150 students-including mine. We were happy to have had him spend the night at our home for several years during the Sundance film festival. He would most often slip out at 7:00 am and then back in after midnight having seen 6-8 films during the day. He became "Uncle Don" to our kids. We looked forward to his visits every year. He was truly a remarkable, multifaceted, brilliant man.

Bishop Don Marshall was the Bishop of the 58th Young Single Adult Ward where Rhonda and I met. He rightfully took credit (along with his wonderful wife Jean) with that twinkle in his eye for our marriage and was an incredible influence on me on how to live a creative and fantastic life. My bookshelves are lined with his books. He taught me to appreciate story telling in writing and film. We will miss him.

I was privileged to take his International Cinema class at BYU, which was quite possibly my favorite class of all time. He was a brilliant man, and hilarious. My sister and I ran into him at the opera a couple of years ago (over 20 years since either of us had seen him) and he remembered both of us! He was a true shining light!

Truly, Don really WAS The Most Interesting Man in the World. He was a fascinating, talented person in so many ways. I often think of the last time I visited with him and his amazing wife Jean. It was exceptionally hard to tear myself away from them and their wonderful home. Heaven certainly has a special person back.

So sad to see you go, Don. I cherish the years of collaboration with you developing the Humanities 101 tutorials and those tricky International Cinema edits. Condolences to you Jean and all the family. A great, gentle and inspiring man has left us. A haere.
