Donald McCormick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 10 to Sep. 12, 2012.
Donald D. McCormick, age 88, of Albuquerque passed away Sept. 5, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Margery; his sister Dorothy of Tulsa, Okla; children Amy (Craig) of San Diego, Calif., Zachary of Albuquerque, Egan (Jacqueline) of Los Alamos; grandchildren Christopher Anderson, Tyler, Lacey, Chelsea and Micaela McCormick; and great-grandson Logan.
A 50 year resident of Los Alamos, he was active in politics, serving as a Probate Judge and County Clerk. He was a Cub Scoutmaster, Big Brother, Lassie League umpire and Little League coach and umpire. He participated in Toastmasters. He set up a successful campaign for a new van for "The Christmas Lady" so she could continue to distribute clothing to the people of Northern New Mexico.
Don was an active parishioner of Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry, as a lay reader, and as chaplain of the children's service for 25 years.
He loved being on stage, having roles in Little Theatre and Don Juan Playhouse productions. He was a storyteller and loved making people laugh. Don was an artistic man, never without a camera, often in a darkroom, producing wonderful photos and experimenting with many new (and old) techniques. He loved traditional Jazz and Ragtime music, practicing on his piano daily, often singing the lyrics as he played. He was a pianist for local melodrama productions and shared his love of photography and music by teaching classes or giving individual lessons.
Above all, Don loved his family, absolutely and unconditionally. His presence is missed but his lessons, his spirit, and his love will always remain.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:30 a.m., Sept. 12, 2012 at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE, Albuquerque. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Don was never a suit and tie type. Casual, colorful, or at least not all black, clothing is encouraged. Please visit our online guestbook for Donald at RememberTheirStory.com. French, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE, 505-275-3500.

A world without Don is missing something vital. He was my roommate at Oklahoma A. & M. College during the summer of 1946 after both of us had served in World War II. Don's wit and humor were both "outside the box". It was nice taking 8 hours of Calculus with him that summer, because we leaned on each other's ability to make it a memorable experience. That was the beginning of a life-long friendship that seemingly grew with time and distance. Hope's and my hearts go out to Marge and the rest of the family with the consolation that Heaven just got a little more crowded.

I am saddened by Don's passing. We (and other friends) shared many laughs. Why he even offered to play piano for me and Sheri when we opened "our business." Don, God's grace be with you.

I am saddened to learn that the world is now minus one more spreader of joy. When our daughter Anne was practicing the piece "Georgia on My Mind" on the piano to perform at the Topper Review, Don would come to our house to help her and they had such a good time. Our whole family would join them in sharing jokes and laughter. Another member has joined the Heavenly Choir. Thank you for sharing him Maxine, he touched many lives in such a joyful way.

I'm sorry to hear about Don. Back in the mid 80's, I use to be their Travel Agent in Los Alamos, and yes, he always had his camera. God Bless!
